transmission

Very basic question but I have had several differing answers, when I'm sailing should my transmission be it gear (reverse or forward) or free-wheeling?

Re: transmission

Depends on the type. Most Hurth and mechanical gears you don't want to let's freewheel, lock in reverse. Hydraulic types need a brake to stop freewheeling.
