Transit Time? NY-FL

On another note, it looks as if we will not be sailing, but motoring down the coast. Winds under 10kts... Dang.

Good time to use seat ow....but in reality you won't need a flag or training to slip under your boat with a mask and snorkel. We scrub our hull without scuba gear. He'll I've changed the prop with a mask only, the snorkel kept hitting the hull.

Just curious--how'd you pick up the line on your prop shaft? How far offshore?

The female deck crew did not secure the bow line.
At least we have a new zinc on the shaft, and a clean prop.

Now, scoobert, I was rooting for you, and I'm still wishing you well…but "female" deck crew? I thought both of your crew members were women, so I hate to think what message adding that word was supposed to convey!

Can someone tell me, if i make ocean city, can i run down thru
Chincoteague bay and stay inside until the chesapeake bay? Would hate to go far north for the canal. Then i can scoot to norfolk before the weather turns too nasty. Storm starts tomorrow evening. I can be to ocean city by the am.

Take a look at the forecast from Passage Weather - Sailing Weather - Marine Weather Forecasts for Sailors and Adventurers - PassageWeather

Sunday forecast is for light and variable but the forecast for Monday is really not in your favor. Winds from the SSE to 30 knots and seas to 9 feet. That would be a pretty tough slog for any boat and crew.

By Tuesday, the wind will be 20-25 knots from the NW veering to NE and increasing to 25-30 knots before becoming more easterly and decreasing on Thursday.

Wave heights during the entire period are forecast in the 6-9 foot range and probably somewhat confused.

It looks like your most comfortable sailing weather might be on Thursday and Friday.

Skipper's responsibility to ensure everything is stowed properly prior to heading out.

Didn't know you were running a cruise ship with paid professional crew. But on a sailboat, especially with green crew it's the skipper's responsibility.

Yes, the skipper is ultimately responsible. In maritime law the skipper is responsible even if the skipper is not at the helm or on deck. Just ask Joseph Hazelwood (Exxon Valdez captain).

Before leaving the dock and throughout the voyage the skipper should make sure everything is squared away. The crew should also be vigilant to anything that might go amiss. More experienced crew will notice things more quickly than inexperienced crew.

Good luck. You've taken on a big challenge, inexperienced crew at a challenging time of year to sail.

People are trained to do a job AND the skipper is responsible for seeing that they do it. If two days isn't long enough (imagine that!), then you have to take three, or four, or five, or a week, or a year. You are still responsible.

Yes, you really do need to double-check everything. I do. My husband's great, knows engines, knows fishing, builds submarines for a living in fact, but he is new to sailing, new to cruising, and so I always am looking around and trying to be alert to things left undone. I used to handle all the lines myself, and coil and stow them while he was at the helm. He took some evening sailing lessons locally last summer, which was a big help to both of us. He can get annoyed when I ask if something routine (such as stowing lines!) was done, but I ask anyway. Or check on it myself. Even when he is totally familiar with this stuff, I will still be double-checking everything. As I hope he will.

You spent two days teaching them EVERYTHING, not just line stowage. That's a lot to absorb in two days. Some things won't sink in for awhile. I hope you don't blow the entire round the world adventure by belittling your crew from the get-go. I don't know if you are old enough to remember Reagan, but the one line I live by is TRUST, BUT VERIFY. It fits so many situations.
