Re: Tragic accident with a sailboat
I believe he just fell aslep, the grounding was at night. it is hard to understand what does a solo 76 year old sailor at thiis time of the year at night along the Portuguese shore when for the last night and today were forecasted strong winds.
Maybe he was just tryng to move the boat to a safer place before the stormy weather but even if the South West coast has not many shelters he surely could have waited on Sines for better weather and would be safe and have no need of sailing at night.

Saw that reported a couple of days ago.. surprised to see he was towing his dinghy.
Sleeping on the wrong tack it seems.. Bumma.

Re: Tragic accident with a sailboat
Guessing pretty much.. unless it was a medical event that incapacitated him so he could do nothing else there was no reason to close that shore.. tho I do often see folk sailing close inshore summers.. I always stand off.. not a nice place to play at night and definitely not in the seas over the last week.
If someone can ram Guadaloupe while grabbing a nap I see nothing strange about ramming the coast N of San Vincente.. A sad event.

Sad event indeed. A good friend ran his boat up the beach down here from a nav error due to illness. Can go very wrong very quickly. Might never know what happened.
(This incident was east of St V)

In that case stranger still..
No logical reason to be that close going either way.. I assumed it was on W coast.. where this happened is usually the gentler side..
