My first ASA 103 lesson was today and I also finally got my logbook signed for passing my ASA 101 exam. My instructor said something about he knows I passed but didn't remember what date.

I reminded him that I aced the exam. Then mentioned that it probably happens a lot so I didn't think I was special or anything.

He gave me a look but signed my logbook after checking what day I took the test.

Then he mentioned that ASA103 has an exam at the end too. 100 questions, multiple choice, just like the 101 class. THEN, oh so casually right as he handed my logbook back, he also said that almost no one aces it.

Almost no one, he repeated himself while looking everywhere but at me.

Yeah, that there is what most folks call a challenge.


And now I'm thinking; dammit, just look at what I've gone and done to myself!

I'm going to try but the reality is, I set myself up. If I ace the exam, he'll tell me it was because he got me motivated enough to really study and pay attention. If I don't, he'll fall back on the "it's rare" part.

Basically, my big mouth got me into trouble again.

Who cares how the instructor “feels” about it, if you pass, it doesn’t matter if you ace it or just squeak by, you still get your cert, right?

The first 100 questions are comparatively easy.

It is the 101st, the final question that is the real challenger that separates the Admirals from the mere Captains.

The 99th question:

When did the Titanic sink?

The 100th question?

How many lives were lost?

The 101st question:

What were their names?

You might want to chill out a bit on what your grade is as long as you pass.

The most important thing is that you hopefully start to get the "feel" for sailing and being on the water.

Do you know where the wind is by the way it hits your face? Even if it's like 3 knots?

Can you see the wave difference in the shallows?

Can you see/ feel the tide?

When you are asleep do you suddenly wakeup because of a change in the boat's rhythm/movement.

It's a challenge that's been laid down because I shot off my stupid mouth.

I will either succeed or fail. If I succeed in getting a perfect score on the 103 exam, then I earned it and the challenges and demands for exam perfection will keep coming: 104, 114, etc., all the way to getting my Captains license and teaching endorsement. Even deciding that I don't want to go any further, will constitute a "miss". Until then the question and pressure of whether I can continue the winning streak will never stop.


If I don't get that perfect score, then it's all on me for being a prideful dipstick. I'm not sure which is better, either one ends up with me being a dipstick.

Unfortunately, this is not the kind of information commonly found in classroom or online classes.
For a really well rounded educational experience, I’d recommend the school of hard knocks!

The way i remember the test is that there were enough poorly worded questions and answers that getting 100% really comes down to luck.

I got my best grade (99) on the 104 exam. By that time, I just felt more comfortable with being on a sailboat, doing sailing things, thinking about sailing things, and talking like a pirate.

I only missed one or two questions on the 103 class. My wife missed a few more but we both Aced the class.

And we had to cram to take the test.

If one can answer the questions in the book, one will nail the final test.

He's been on the boat with me for several hours spread across several weeks and knows that I'm constantly trying to live up to the standard in my head that refuses to let me screw up too badly. Or, at least not more than once in a row. In public.

Getting 100% on most written tests is very inefficient.
Are you letting him goad you into becoming inefficient and wasting your time to prop up his ego?
