Yes but you are normal while this is fafa fantasy land on CF where you're only a real sailor when you rough it out

The list grew out of the philosophy of simple cruising and is not about what the average sailor "has" ... we all know that. It's about what is essential to cruise simply without a lot of junk to complicate your life. Nobody says you have to have a bucket and no need to feel guilty about your fancy gear. What works for you may not be essential but its your boat.

Re: The Cruisers Essentials List
@Nick -Autopilot with bow thruster control sounds like the cats ass, never even thought about that, it will be on my list when I go bigger. Gonna have kids in 5 or so years and need more space. You'll like this, I'v always said my boats not big enough till the drill press can have its own room and stay bolted down. I'm 2000 miles from home and pissed i dont have my little table saw or welder. I really only need 50' for shop space. I build constantly, its what I do. When im home for the summer I'm gonna build a high speed winch for my parasail boat. (ski boat convert). Nick your tech thinking is always spot on and I too am a big fan of Steve Dashew

I don't imagine Dashew would care much for our list. ;(

Re: The Cruisers Essentials List
About the bucket thing. Just to show you I am not totally off my rocker, here is a pic:
And here is the website:
Tote-able Toilet with 6 Gallon Bucket and 2 Enzyme Packets
A complete bucket toilet with two enzyme packets- 16.00 USD. Not the best plan for a family of 4, but if I am soloing in a smaller boat it would do the job, esp if the plumbing was out.

Today if you can't control it with an app from your iPhone/iPad then it has no place on the boat. All those tools are just too old school! :-))

I don't see the bucket being very useful anywhere except during offshore passages. In which case, you could just "direct deposit" and skip the bucket altogether. Unless you're sailing in high latitudes...
But since the vast majority of a sailors time is spent everywhere except on-passage, I think a working sanitation system is necessary. It could be a simple homemade composting head, or a potapotty, or whatever... but something has to be used in port other than a bucket.

Not such a disaster when it breaks as well.
I'm lucky, if there's enough wind to move there boat, the aries will steer it.

Re: The Cruisers Essentials List
The bucket of contention may actually be the same thing we all have on board anyway. It doubles as a fire fighting device, emergency brake, perhaps a dish washing basin ... ;-)
Really, since a bucket IS an essential piece of equipment, I say let it be. After all, we are not forced to use a piece of equipment only because we have one (another example here: the sextant).
Hugs,
b.

Absolutely agree bucket(s) DO belong on the essential list. Not just as an emergency head. I find all kinds of uses for them on board. I also make my own and at the same time help the keep more plastics out of the landfills or garbage dump:
THE BIANKA LOG BLOG: A DIFFERENT KIND OF BUCKET LIST
What's not to like? IMO you can never have enough buckets on board!

Means of recharging batteries (personal choice)
Multimeter
weather gear">Foul weather gear (per sailor)
Hand tools
Block and tackle to be used as vang/ preventer/ hoisting tackle
Whisker pole which can be used as boat hook, etc.
Water 5 gallon containers
Fuel jerry cans
Bosun's chair?
Swim ladder or rear step up
Snorkling gear
Oil or D-cell Lamps with red and green paper.
Anchor roller
Anchor ready
Anchors (3)
Hand bearing compass
Rules of the road book
Binoculars
Chronometer
Charts, nav tables, cruising guides, basic nav. gear
Sails, including storm jib, 3 reefed main, drifters
Canvas which acts as rain catcher, awning.

Chain for anchors
Anchor windlass?
Abandon ship bag?
epoxy and basic boat repair kit- personalized for boat

Of course, those with ? behind them will get kicked out if enough people write they have cruised successfully without them. I am thinking three strikes and they are out. Things will get added if there is a consensus that it is absolutely necessary- mechanical autopilot seems to be headed that way.

Re: The Cruisers Essentials List
A number of people have proposed a systems approach. I worked out last night on a table and it looks pretty good. I divided the checklist into 4 basic categories:
1. A safe boat
2. Healthy crew
3. Safe voyage
4. Emergency prepareness
From here I stated an action that I wanted and possible means/tools used to complete that action. For example I used
1. Safe boat
A. No leaks (action wanted)
a. Thru hulls good (possible solution)
b. Prop shaft not leaking or only leaking a little while running (possible sol)
c. tight hatches (possible solution)
d. dry bilge- if not from where? (possible solution)
I came up with 22 actions, each with mulitple solutions. I will publish it if you really want. If not we can just stay with the checklist.

Re: The Cruisers Essentials List
It would be interesting for someone to take this list(in almost any one of its forms) and priced it out for a mid 30s size boat. Ill bet it would be shocking. Just a thought.____Grant.
