Tan(course)

I'm a retired Inland guy that trying to learn big water sailing. I'm stuck right now with course to steer. My departure is 54'02 with dlat 105 equaling 0.51. The answer to the working example is N27°W or 027°. I am unable to figure out how 027° was achieved. I hope this is enough information for an answer.
