Surveyor in Washington (Seattle / Anacortes / Bellingham)
Hi All,
Looking for recommendations on a good surveyor for 32' sailboat in northern Washington (boat is in Anacortes, I have no issues paying a bit of travel time to get the right person).
Don't want to go with the broker's recommendation, everyone who has been recommended to me by other people must be good because they're all too booked up to get a survey done in the time period specified on my purchase and sale.
For record have already contacted (and have no time available):
Matt Harris
John Sanford
Jerry Edwards
Mike McGlenn
Any other good folk out there?
Thanks in advance,
-- Bass

Re: Surveyor in Washington (Seattle / Anacortes / Bellingham)
I was going to say Matt Harris... but I guess that's out. How "hot" a sale is it? Worth the wait? It seems right now is when people want to list their boat, but people are reluctant to buy before spring..... many a boat will sit for 7 months before the weather gets better...

Re: Surveyor in Washington (Seattle / Anacortes / Bellingham)
Well, we already have an offer on the boat with a 21 day period to get everything taken care of... might need to try to extend that period I guess...

Wow, Amazed you cant get one of those guys for a 4 hour survey in that time. Bummer. Hopefully others on here have a name for you. This forum is busiest in the am it seems.
I'm sure there are others around here that are good.

Other ideas
Ask a yard who they think is the best. Not a yard right next to your broker though!
Call Bob Perry and ask him.
Contact Minaret on this forum... he's in this area and a shipwright extraordinaire! He would know I bet.

I know you said Matt Harris is unavailable, but he has surveyed two boats for us and based on that experience I can highly recommend his professionalism, level of detail, and communication skills. If it were me, I would try to work out a way to meet his schedule. I wish you the best of luck whoever you choose.

Maybe your sea trial could be done from Anacortes to Bellingham and Matt could do the survey there! Pretty long trip I guess......

Re: Surveyor in Washington (Seattle / Anacortes / Bellingham)
You might think on looking in say, Port Townsend. Between all of the boat culture there, & its proximity, it's a possible option. On which note, I've heard good things about Alain Vilage, there. Haven't had any surveying done by him. But one of the things which bettered my opinion of him, was that he seems to know when to say no to a survey, if it's outside his depth of expertise.
He did as much, regarding a boat in which I had an interest in, in Port Townsend.
One other area to research regarding surveyors, here on the forums for tips & wise thinks is, a few months back, there was a long thread on surveying (I bellieve) or such was much of it's theme. And one of our wise, resident surveyors added in a lot of wisdom. In particular, he brought up the use of thermal imagers in surveys. Including lots of example pictures, showing X, & Y. Along with stating that if you can find a surveyor who's certified in one's use, then it's more than worth the time to do so. As they'll pinpoint a lot of things that might otherwise get missed, especially interms of; laminates, structures, & cores/core issues.
HTH, & let us know who you go with, & how things turn out.

Re: Surveyor in Washington (Seattle / Anacortes / Bellingham)
Thanks for all the replies. I can actually personally attest to Alain Vilage, he did a survey for us this spring and *really* saved us from a bad boat. He's very careful and very knowledgeable, and a fun guy in a curmudgeonly sort of way ;-)
I was thinking travel from Port Townsend to Anacortes would be a non-starter but maybe I should rethink.

Re: Surveyor in Washington (Seattle / Anacortes / Bellingham)
There are some in Anacortes who swear by David Jackson. I know he is in particular supposed to be very good for wooden boats but that he also does all types. I have not used him but know him enough to say hello. I have used Matt Harris and he is exceptional. Edwards in Seattle did not do good by me although he has a good rep otherwise I hear. I would not recommend him.

Bass,
Here is the link to the Society of Accredited Marine Surveyors in Washington state.
On that list you will find the surveyor we use and refer to often, Wayne Gilham. Wayne has deep experience and credentials, does an incredible detailed job, and is a boat owner and sailor himself. I can highly recommend Wayne. [No affiliation or inducement to refer; just a very happy customer...]
Good luck with your pursuit.
Cheers!
Bill
