After so many years of designing beautiful boats, the Dashews are retiring.

Beauty and the eye of the beholder, but designing, promoting or buying leisure boats to cross oceans powered solely by fossil fuels was and is an affront to climate science. Good riddance.

@Bigmarv

They are perhaps the most well known cruising couple in the US. For many people they are THE authority when it comes to look at how to do things right on a boat.
Most of that comes from their very long cruising life onboard their Beowulf sailboats.
They turned to fuel efficient power boats after their sailing career.

The longer you cruise, the more their ideas make sense.

They have given a lot back through their extensive writing. They have made many of their books available as a free download, including the cruisers' bible "The offshore cruising encyclopaedia" .

About time for his age, though he drew some of the greatest cruising designs motor and sail, I felt he should have do much more designs that can be afforded for mere mortals.

The Dashews were the more informed modern Pardeys of world cruisers. I have read pretty much everything they have written, very informative. Briefly met them when they were sailing in the PNW many years ago. I guess you might call me one of his fans. They have added a lot to sailing in their active years.

Guess they can go full time cruising now that they retire from design.

;-)

Enjoy!!

What the hell is a sailing career in what regards cruising?

Someone chose to cruise on a sailing boat or on a motor boat.

It has nothing to do with a carer and many chose to cruise on a sailboat way past the age the Dashews have now and they have chosen to pass to motorboat cruising long ago.

I do agree with bigmarv point of view when he says that "leisure boats to cross oceans powered solely by fossil fuels" is something that is not right and should not be considered.

Re: Steve & Lisa Dashew retire

No need to bark.

Well, they did turn cruising into a career for themselves by making money from it.
Make money and get well known is what I personally understand is what many would consider a career.

Nothing wrong with that. Good for them that they are successful in doing this.

While I am personally not a big fan of using fossile fuel, I accept that for some its an option and choice.
I will not go so far and condemn that.

For some people a sailboat gets hard to handle in a safe manner when they want to continue cruising in an advanced age. Powerboating can be an option for some.
The Dashews did that and tried to minimize the negative effects by designing power boats which are very seaworthy and much more fuel efficient than most others.

I'd think there are many many many big scale pollution creators around who have not given that as much consideration as the Dashews do.

I thought they "retired" in the 90's. they've been radio silent for decades! I'd have to say that the most popular "cruising couple" in North America are the Shards, they've built quite the media empire around cruising!! and they've been at it for nearly 30 years now!
