Hi all,
I am the sailing director for a small camp in Northern Michigan, and have been growing the tiny program there starting last summer. One of the popular aspects of the camp in general is the out trips we do, where we bus
kids and counselors somewhere to go backpacking, rock climbing, canoeing etc. With our new focus on sailing, I am considering proposing a sailing out trip to my director, in which we do a four day sail/exploration trip to S Manitou Island in Lake Michigan, from Leland Michigan which is about 14 nm.
I am a US sailing instructor and have some cruising experience as well as big
boat racing near Detroit, and pretty good familiarity with the Lake. Our largest
boat we would use is an AMF 2100, a
trailer sailor with decent
interior room (our out trips are supposed to be pretty spartan,) which needs some TLC but is in pretty good condition. As we develop this Idea, I would love some
advice on the
passage, the boat, and whether this would be a safe enough idea to propose to families of teenagers.
Thanks,
Sean
