To whom ever decided it was a good idea to empty their holding tank on the west side of Galliano Island by Porlier Pass on Friday I just want to tell you that you are an idiot!
Our bay collected most of your **** and it ended up on our lines and dinghy. If I wanted to anchor in **** soup I would go to false creek. This is the second time this has happened within the last year!
The law in Canada is you must be 2 km from shore. Pay the $15 and go to a pumping station!
Sorry about the rant but even the next day it is still floating around.

It's a good friendly reminder to all of us that the stuff can linger. I'm willing to bet that even the most conscientious of us has pumped out inside the 3-mile (US) limit at least once. At least pick good open water and underway.

I’m not anal about the strict letter of the dumping law. But it’s absolutely clear to me that dumping in ANY enclosed area with poor volume/flow should not be done.

This is why I’m often confused about what people do who only have direct discharge systems with no or very limited holding capability. Seems to me it precludes spending much time in the kind of secluded, protected anchorages that I love so much.

How do you get floating pieces?
You have to pump it out don’t you? Doesn’t the pump even if not a macerator more or less turn it into a purée if you will?
I know mine is macerated going in, and coming out. There is nothing much but thick water if you will, yes nasty smelling, but there are no pieces?

But hey, thanks to Mr. Floatie coming out of retirement, things will be a bit cleaner around Victoria by 2020. In all fairness, the Yanks were doing similar dirty tricks in the area until about, oh, 50 years ago... so there's that. (now maybe Mr. Floatie can lend his services to the Tijuana river that dumps Mexican poo into the ocean just north of the border near San Diego?

It was beautifully chewed up into a river of sludge. Mist have been a big boat cause there was lots of ground up poop.

Some systems, like mine in a Leopard, drain by gravity. Simply open the valve, under the tank, and the soup just runs out on its own.

It did go thru Mr. Joker on the way to the tank via a pump so I'm sure it is chewed up (sorry for that visual) some prior to dropping out.

Exactly where did this occur? We have seen coral spawn on the water, and it looks much like what mintaka described, but is not fecal material, but another natural phenomenon.

According to the OP - British Columbia, Canada. About 49°N. so I doubt that it's coral spawning

People do some pretty low things, but ignorance can also come into play. My brother was once docked at a marina in Plattsburgh, New York, and one of his guests inadvertently starting emptying the holding tank right there in the marina!

Few UK boats have holding tanks and pump out stations a bit thin on the ground. What do people do? well use common sense hopefully, but 5 metre tides help.

Speculation but perhaps a trawler or ferry rather than a yacht.
