Here in florida, could not register boat with the state till I had the USCG documentation. Which took seven months to come back to me!

Not clear about USCG documentation benefits.

1. Annual USCG fee $25. Was free until last year. How much is California's?

2. May be required by some foreign countries to cruise their waters.

3. Allows the beneficial owner (you) to protect your investment by recording a Preferred Ship Mortgage against your own boat with the USCG thus making it unprofitable for unscrupulous workers or suppliers to pursue a lien against your boat.

19thol, in response to your post:

Was your situation: Purchased a USCG documented boat, and then chose registered it with the state of florida?

Interesting because that is exactly the reverse of what I am expecting: Purchase of a state registered boat, and register with USCG documentation.

I am guessing you could not register in Florida until clear title from your vessel previous USCG registration could be established?

What paperwork did you receive at the time of purchase? a bill of sale? the USCG documentation? Title from florida in the previous owners name signed over to you? Title from another state in the previous owners name signed over to you? A sign that says "this is your boat now": written on a beer box in crayon? (just kidding)

Sorry I don't understand. Over the last 30 years I have registered at least 8-10 boats with the state of Florida that were never documented. As far as I know, USCG documentation has nothing at all to do with FL state registration.

When dealing with the Documentation Center, bring plenty of patience. The turn-around is measured in months. Further, if one should have any type of error, you reset the clock.

Call the CG and they will tell you what the current waiting time is.
Earlier this month I called and they said 11 days to process a Bill of Sale and a Re-Documentation. (From my name to my LLC)
Sure enough, 2 weeks later I got an email saying I screwed up and checked the wrong box, had to se-submitt the whole thing, but no extra charge.
