Re: Slow-boating through the Canal

We transmitted in 2016. When traveling from Caribbean to Pacific it is a late afternoon departure. If you cannot maintain 10 knots you tie up to a large ship mooring for the night in Gatun Lake. Your advisor departs the boat that evening and a new advisor arrives the next morning to complete the transit.

When traveling from Pacific to Caribbean, it was an early morning departure and we transmitted in one day even though we cannot maintain 10 knots. We arrived Shelter Bay under darkness which was OK since we had departed Shelter Bay previously and were familiar with the narrow entrance.

Cost under 50’ was $800.

Re: Slow-boating through the Canal

do not worry Ryban:
plan to overnite and continue next day.
I transited in 197O,my best speed was about 4,obsessive compulsive as I am worried myself to sickness, thought all sort of crazy things, like getting a big outboard, hire a tow, sell the darn boat and fly home leave the boat at the mooring in the club and come home hoping nobody will notice, and forget about it.
In the end,we anchor somewhere to spend the night, pilot was picked up,and returned next morning to finish the transit.
The only inconvenience was having to spend the night with the two hired helpers plus my wife and daughter in a 34 Tartan!!!!
You will be fine, all in all a wonderful experience, best time of my life
cheers
David

I suspect your figure is far too low...

My 53 footer will cost about $1900 with all things thrown in... I am crossing in Jan 18.

Canal transit costs are a pretty popular topic. Link to recent thread below, which includes a link to tariffs document on the Canal Authority web site.

Yep, 50 to 80 feet is the second bracket. It is still great deal.
