I actually prefer your style of winch. The self tailing types seem to chew up the lines a little faster than I like.

Re: Single Handing for Beginners

This is another area where a tiller beats a wheel, assuming that the boat in question is small enough to accommodate the tiller.

Face forward, tiller between legs or against butt, take a few wraps off of working jib sheet with lazy ib sheet in other hand with a few wraps on new winch. Now by moving towards working sheet to let it fly you are taking the tiller with you (between legs) ,as boat comes thru the wind ,take up on the new sheet and finish the tack now by pushing out with your butt against the tiller as you take in on the jib sheet. This single-handed maneuver can be done faster than with most crew and is way faster and more precise than I have ever done with a wheel.
If you are fortunate enough to have crew that can properly fill a bikini bottom ,it would prove worthwhile to teach this maneuver………just another reason to avoid single handing altogether.
FWIW : I keep my tiller heavily varnished.
