Most older types of thermostats with a liquid filled tube attached are not voltage dependent . I have changed over both my fridge and freezer thermostats to the digital type https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/DC12V-24...r=582081193822 like this one and you would have to get a 24v one .This lets me choose the cut in and cut out temperature of the fridge.

Re: Silly question time.fridge thermostat

I am assuming the original thermostat had only two wires connected just like any electrical switch would. When thermostat knob is turned to the off position does refrigerator stop? If not the both of the two wires on thermostat may be connected to the same split brass terminal.

There are three basic mechanical thermostat temperature ranges Freezer, Refrigerator and and drink cooler thermostat. Small refrigerator thermostat temperature sensing small tube is connected to evaporator. Are you sure this temperature sensing tube is correctly located.

Then the problem is the end of thermostat sense tube is not getting cold enough. Normally this small tube is clamped to the evaporator. The amount of tube in contact with evaporator is going to calibrate the thermostat knob's position. Best setup is when control knob is set in the mid position and that amount of sense tube is held tight against evaporator producing the correct desired box temperature.
