Shooting Stars

For those of you inclined to "inform me" about recent astrological events- hold your tongues. I know and I don't care.

I've seen more shooting stars since moving my boat to this marina and beginning my cruising preparations in earnest than I've seen in the last 10 years. It makes me feel very special and like what I am doing is blessed.

This is not a comment at Aussiesuede cuz he asked for no comments. This is a new observation of my own.

I am seeing lot's of rainbow turds and cross eyed dolphins lately. Am I a chosen one or are there just lot's of cross eyed dolphins on weird diets.

Also - for us city dwellers, getting out to a dark place and really seeing stars again is absolutely magical...

At certain times of year, you are likely to see a great number of meteors* in the night sky. These events are called meteor showers and they occur when the Earth passes through the trail of debris left by a comet as it orbits the Sun.

On a typical night a shooting star can be seen every 10 to 15 minutes, but on some nights of the year a spectacular "meteor shower" occurs and shooting stars can be seen every few minutes or less. One of the best meteor showers, the “Perseids”, happens in summer (peaked August 11 & 12, this year).

Eta Aquarids May 1-8
Delta Aquarids July 15- August 15
Perseids July 25 - August 18
Orionids October 16-27
Taurids October 20-November 30

* A "shooting star" has nothing at all to do with a star!, but are caused by tiny bits of dust and rock called meteoroids falling into the Earth's atmosphere and burning up. The short-lived trail of light the burning meteoroid produces is called a meteor. Meteors are commonly called shooting stars or falling stars. If any part of the meteoroid survives burning up and actually hits the Earth, that remaining bit is then called a meteorite.

I bet you are sitting outside more often? Which marina are you in? Wait until you start cruising away from city lights. Shooting stars, satellites, and even some space ships will be visible!

Romance is dead. Along with magic & passion, it was killed in a conflict with knowledge. The battles wasn’t conclusive, as uncertainty, mystery, & imagination survived.

I often wonder, in amazed admiration, at the astonishing wonder of it all - but being rational being, I cannot find it romantic nor magical.

All this romantic talk reminded me of my very first offshore passage. Nothing like your first time, you know!

We were heading from Virginia to Virgin Gorda, in November, 2001. That was the year that the Leonid meteor shower was the most intense it had been for decades. We were about 300 nm north of the BVI on the peak night, and the air was clear, in spite of some cumulus floating around.

The meteors were almost continuous, and so bright you could see them glowing through the sail. Some would explode at the end of their plunge to Earth. Others left a trail of golden sparkles across the sky. It was an awe-inspiring experience, alone at the wheel, sailing far from land, with a show like that going on above me.

My watch ended at 0300, but I stayed in the cockpit until the dawn's twilight washed them out.

Are they now allowing liveaboards there next to Pete's???

We lived in Bear Island Marina before they closed it. They had just opened the one next to Pete's and had a strict no liveaboard policy. We finally had to move up to Oyster Cove marina.
