Sailum is registered as a (2nd) company name (handelsnaam) - KvK 34351362

The site also claims "Members’ IDs and sailing experience are verified" -- how?

Liz, I bet that they'll use the same methods that bare boat charter companies use to vet their customers... and we all know that these methods are fool proof. Spending a few weeks sailing in an area with lots of charterers is a good way to evaluate the success of the system (ho,ho).

While I can sympathize with the organizers, I can't see it succeeding. I know for absolute fact that I would NEVER consider such a swap. I value my boat too much to put her in the unsupervised hands of a stranger, no matter how many ASA classes he had taken! And for that matter, I wouldn't like to take the responsibility for some strangers strange boat, even though I feel that I am a pretty competent cruiser... boats are too complicated these days, and too variable in form and function.

A well meaning but futile effort IMO.

Jim

Re: Sharing initiative

Hi people,

My friends and I had dinner last night and they told me a bit more on the beta version of the site that will air later this year. It will definitely become more open and interactive than it is right now. Asides from the swapping part of the site, possibilities for private boat rental will also become possible, with insurance. The whole setup of the platform will remain that it is by sailors, for sailors, so all the sharing and renting done will be with experienced people who love boats and know how to handle them. At present, registration is still free and that will remain this way for now.

Regards, Thomas
