Use to be that you had to hire someone to promot you and you had better be good at what you are doing, now adays self promotion is the way to go and you dont have to be good at what you do ,just need to be good at self promotion...I know a very popular artist that had come from a wealthy family and in the early to mid 70s won a competition for a US postal stamp design, after that he kind of flopped.then in the early 90s the world wide web was taking off and self promotion became easy and now due to that this guy heads a very successful art studio, very Thomas Kincade like. Some people think its great art but to me it looks very cartoonish, all due to "self promotion" because if the stuff had to stand on its own merit it would not make the cut as "great art"...DVC

Re: Self Promotion (Changing Values?)

I really should have at least one cup of coffee before I post anything on the internet. I've had my coffee and I feel much better now, thank you.

I really am quite happy to see someone successfully market their adventures. Advertising on or of blogs is not what irks me. It's the self aggrandizing attitudes. Has humility fallen out of fashion?

I agree that Sailing Simplicity's blog is much better now. Actually it's quite well done. I wish her nothing but the best of luck.

My rant wasn't meant to single out any one blogster though, just speaking in general terms.

Re: Self Promotion (Changing Values?)

So lets see, buy a boat, live on it for several years, find work here and there, sell boat, I can say this,,, many people have done it and still doing it but she is turning it into something else. It might work for her. Look at realty TV right now. Can not stand the stuff but it is one of the most watched TV shows right now. Maybe she is on to something. Can not blame her for trying.

Re: Self Promotion (Changing Values?)

I get your point but I also see that some people with writing skills want to sell their work. Maybe this particular individual actually has some speaking skills that are marketable or maybe he's just another arrogant jerkoff.

It's cool. The occasional rant is good for the soul. I agree with you as far as self aggrandizing attitudes goes.

Those who boast too loudly, are usually found lacking in some way. Those with humility, confidence and understatement tend to be the true masters of their craft - SailingwithSoul

Checked out 'humidity' on Google: 146 million hits. This puts humidity below Justin but above a toad.

Arggghhhhh : you meant 'humility'?

I am afraid 'humility' gets 26 million hits only: definitely out of fashion.

If you are out for clicks, avoid 'humility' by all means.

Ha Ha Ha! Touche barnakiel

I do have a small blog, but I try to keep if fun and humble. Maybe one day I'll be able to effectively promote and monetize my dreams, but until then, it's more about sharing and having fun.

Amazing! If you never do another notable thing again for the rest of your life it'll be ok. You've racked up plenty of karma points with this.

I don't know how it works over there in England but couldn't this be parleyed into a knighthood or something?

Re: Self Promotion (Changing Values?)

I forget where I heard this but I met a guy who used to say in a self effacing way, "I'm gonna be the first person to sail around the world -- and not write a book about it." I don't begrudge these people their efforts at making money but some of them are just not worth reading -- so I don't.
