Seeking Advise: Purchasing a Boat

Hello All,

We are considering purchasing a 2011 Leopard 44 that was previously in a charter fleet in the Med, specifically Croatia. Our concern is the engine hours are not known. According to the aftermarket techs, there are 1600 hours on the engines, Yanmar 39 HP. However, when the boat was sold to the current owners last year the spec sheet listed 3900 hours.

According to the sellers broker it is customary for charter companies in the Med not to replace the techs when they wear out (we were told after 200-300 hours. Therefore there is no way to accurately account for how many hours there actually are on the engines.

We only learned of this situation after my wife did some digging on social media and found the boat while the current owners were shopping for it and going thru the survey and sea trial. She then found the old sales spec sheet last listed the 3900 hours. When we found the current listing, there were no hours reported. Our broker was on the boat and reported that the techs read 1600 hours.

My question is, has anyone here bought a former charted boat from the Med, and is what we are being told accurate from your experience? We are concerned that no-one really knows how many hours are on the engines.

Any input would be appreciated,

Mike

Seems that no one really does know how many hours are on the engines. I wonder why a charter base would do that? Perhaps to obfuscate the fact that there may be 5,000+ hours on these engines, but get a selling price in line with there only being 1,600 engine hours...?**

For clarity's sake, this is your first red flag.

Also, funny you should mention it - there's another thread started this week on a related topic:

By the way, kudos to your smart wife and her excellent research!

Oh, and just for future reference, it's "Seeking Advice", not "advise" (thread title).

Fair winds and best of luck finding your boat,

**Why are you trusting the seller's broker? He/she does not have your interests in mind.
