Cool Searching for Texas DIY Marina

I seek advice or recommendations on a DIY Marina on the coast of Texas. I have a 45' Aluminum Sloop in the midst of re-fit and need a new home/workplace to continue the work in the USA. Let me thank you ahead of time for any suggestions or recommendations. Thanks.

Where are you n the Texas coast are you currently?

There are a number of yards in Galveston bay that can work

There are yards around rockport, corpus, etc as well.

If you’re inclined you can even venture into the small workboat yards (shrimping fleets) and find a favorable place.

Thank you for the suggestions. I'm currently sitting in Guatemala and will be headed back to USA in December. I'm searching for a space to call home in Texas, for a few months.

You might want to consider Clear Lake Marine Center (on NASA Rd 1). It is a yard and marina. They have a travel lift and I THINK they allow DIY. I'm not sure you could get in there with much more that 6' draft. Not fancy but GREAT location.

Re: Searching for Texas DIY Marina

Almost all of the marinas require you to be signed up as a contractor with professional liability insurance to perform work in their marina.

The marinas will allow boat owners to perform the basic maintenance stuff in your slip (light fiberglass repair / painting, etc.) as long as you are not inconveniencing your neighbors by creating a mess or excessive noise.

The marinas are happy that the owners are maintaining their boats as unfortunately many (most?) boats after they are purchased sit neglected and become an eyesore.

Anything that requires the boat to be hauled out and on the blocks requires contractor status.

Clear Lake Marina I am pretty sure no longer allows DIY.

The only DIY's I know of:

Pier77 in Galveston- you can do all of your own work (thru hulls, hull job etc.) or you can hire some it out to them. You could probably find some local workers willing to do the heavy lifting (i.e. sanding) for a fee.

Hillman's Marine in Dickinson Texas

Basically you can park it on their land and work on it. I doubt that they would be able to accommodate a 45' .

Pier77 is your best bet.

Cheers

There was a yard near Aransas Pass a little north of Galvaston. I don't know if he is still there. He had a travel lift and could accomidate our 45' mono.

Another option is Pulling Bull, a yard in/near Rockport - which is south of Galveston and a little north of Port Aransas.

That sounds like the little yard I was trying to recall. He had a travel-lift that will haul a 45' sloop or cutter. Rockport area.
