Sea of Cortez Marinas

We are looking for a marina to move our boat to next fall in the Sea of Cortez. We would like to be north of the hurricane belt. We have been checking out Marina San Carlos, on the mainland side near Guayanas. The idea , and price of keeping it on the hard for 8 months and launching it for the 4 that we could spend there sounds inviting. Does anyone have any first hand experiences with this marina or any marinas north of La Paz . Price is an issue for us.

We were there ten years ago with an O'day Daysailer, stayed in a hotel and kept the little guy in the marina. Nice people, good boat work available. The only thing boaters were in need of was ROPE. None available. Nice bays to sail in. All in all, a good experience.

Cortez,

Marina San Carlos and the adjacent Marina Seca (dry storage) are first class operations. They will transport your boat on hydraulic tractor trailer from the marina to the work or storage area. Very professional operation. Their quality of work for bottom painting, barrier coating, etc. is very good, but you should expect stateside prices. You can also do the work yourself.

There is a marine supply store close by, Star Marine, and they have or can get most of what you would need, including rope!

There are also at least a couple of machine shops / fabricators in Guaymas about 12 miles away. I have used Hernandez brothers in Guaymas several times, and the work was excellent.

On the other side of San Carlos is Marina Real. They have a similar operation. Their slip prices are a bit lower. We have stayed at both marinas, and prefer Real for their price. They are a bit N of town so a car would be very handy.

Be sure to stop in La Paz, Marina Costa Baja five star resort and enjoy cruising north on the east side of the Baja to Loreto, Bahia Conception. Take your time. Photo at Honeymoon cove located 3 miles offshore near Loreto

Also, being on the hard most of the year is definitely cheaper, but distress the boat. Be sure to cover all inlet ports, windows etc to reduce uv. Check Culiacan, 60 miles north of Mazatlan for reasonable moorge (drug capital of Sinaloa cartel)

If price is of concern, then look at the Marina Seca in Guaymas. It is very close to San Carlos. It is cheaper, and if you have work to do now or when you return, it is much easier. Gabriel is good to work with. http://marinaguaymas.com/index.html

Also, my insurance allowed me to keep boat st La Paz, I survived hurricane at Marina Costa Baja that wiped out Los Cabos. Hurricane line on policy was about 60 miles S of La Paz
