Re: Sceptical About Crew Found Online

Wow. Really got a lot of answers here.

I was not expecting this fast and this many replies. The trip has not been planned out entirely yet, but there will definately be one .

-How hard is it to find crew with short/long notice?
Since i may be not untill the last minute i know all the details about when and where. Im also unsure how much im "binding" myself too keep the "deals" i make (not that i plan to cancel plans). I just want some whiggle room.

-How picky can i be?
Do i have the luxury of chosing the perfect applicant in a pile of crew members or is it more a lesser of two evils?

I consider myself a person to get easily along with. I don't mind if people have a couple of bad habits, as long as they don't mind mine .

I wanna thank everyone for the replies and your help .

Edit: Oh, and the crew im looking for is not paid, and will have to pay there own expenses and chip in on fuel/food. (im a student, im poor .)

Please tell me the difference between picking up a hitchhiker and letting him/her drive while you take a nap in the backseat.
And taking unknown crew aboard and trusting them with your life.

One difference is that on a boat you're going offshore for multiple days and if you check into a different country, you're responsible for your crew until they're signed off your crew list.

i think you will find violence between crew that know each other ie(husband and wife) is more common than from "guests" found on the internet!

at least that is my experiance from taking hundreds of back paker type crew sourced online!

since you are only doing a short trip i would reccomend looking locally to where you live,if you are at university post there on uni msg boards.

that way you will have a chance to meet before the trip,;
;they will be in the same age group
you will save on transport if you all take the same flight.
probably eat simmilar food (big mack hard to find in croatia)
have a common language.
be blond and good looking............

also reccomend going out for a massive boozeup that way you will find out who cannot handle their alchol pre trip, also don't take drugs into croatia as penalties are severe....

you allways have the last say so don't be afraid to turn unsuitable candidates away
have a good trip

Re: Sceptical About Crew Found Online

Its funny to see how anyone who has sourced crew online writes positive reports, the naysayers usually cite "hearing this or that". I feel its that fear of strangers instilled by watching too much television.

Ive sourced pretty much all my crew online to date (15-20 people total). Never had a problem.

Floatplan.com generates most traffic. Since you're in Europe, you can try the ybw.com forums or yacht.de to source sailors from your local community.

+1 atoll... I would add that if the timing of the trip is 'iffy', let folks know and have a few back ups that are acceptable. ++1 on the drugs comment... Cheers, Capt Phil

Blond, good looking and alcoholic.

I like your crew criteria. When do we sail?
