SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- The Coast Guard is searching for a sailboat expected back in San Francisco yesterday. Jim Gray, 63, of San Francisco left for the Farallon Islands yesterday morning on his 40-foot sailing vessel “Tenacious.”
Gray’s wife called the coast guard around 8 p.m. Sunday when he didn’t return or answer cell phone calls. The Coast Guard started their search soon after, and according to Lt. Amy Marrs, were favored with good weather conditions.

It's a real mystery. Jim Gray was a Microsoft scientist with about 10 years sailing experience. He was sailing his red-hulled C&C 40 in excellent weather.

Details here: Sea search for missing Microsoft scientist / No sign of S.F. man who set out alone for Farallon Islands in 40-foot sailboat

Very very strange. You would think that if his boat went down, it would leave a large fuel slick that could be seen from the air.

The mystery continues...

The mystery of what happened to Microsoft engineer Jim Gray deepened Tuesday, with leads of a possible sighting of his boat turning up nothing despite a massive search from Monterey Bay to Oregon.
His family is perplexed about the fate of the avid boater and sometime maverick, his daughter Heather told the Mercury News on Tuesday, two days after he left on a day sailing trip to scatter his mother's ashes at the Farallon Islands. Gray carefully planned offshore trips in his 40-foot C&C yacht, she said, but he would leave important sailing safety equipment at home.

That is about the only thing I could think of...or heart failure and the boat is on autopilot motoring off in some heading that isn't being considered by the Coast Gaurd. At 6knts, he could be 400 - 450 miles out by now.

This is absolutely terrible to lose a fellow sailor with the long list of great contributions to society like Jim's.

Very strange X-files like.

I don't know how they came-up with 100mile search area based on 48hrs X 7knts...Coast Gaurd math must be different than mine.

Well David Old Jersey,If he's comming to OZ he'll be allright,At least he is PC/WEB savy.My bet is,Someone bumpted him off and someone in the family knows something about it,maybe, himself. As for falling overboard,he might have, anyway everyone will know when they find the boat.Hows this with a similar scenerio. They find the boat sailing away merrily, but instead of falling overboard,he's had some med problem and he is still on board, maybe alive maybe not.But deffinately not towards Australia.Mudnut.

Reminds me of that boat "Ruth" that was found without any crew off the coast of Bahamas. The boat was last seen in the Azores. Everyone thought it was the 'Devils Triangle' thing. Turned out that someone tried to steal the boat and got spooked so they let it drift out to sea.

I was surprised the story had nearly a full page in the Times (of London!) today, albeit not front cover - they had no answers either.........
