Re: Salt Water Crocs in the Whitsundays

Would appear so, at Cid Harbour like the previous two attacks. Happened again near sunset. When will people learn not to swim at that time of the day?

Re: Salt Water Crocs in the Whitsundays

I think that's four attacks since the beginning of September.

Re: Salt Water Crocs in the Whitsundays

I heard, after the other 2 attacks, that a whale carcass had been floating around the area for a bit. That may have attracted a few extra sharks. This latest attack is well after that. Apparently a 40yo guy with bites to leg and arm

Re: Salt Water Crocs in the Whitsundays

I was talking to a friend today who lives in Cairns,
She said there have been quite a few Croc attacks in Cairns and Mossman, But nothing very much is published about it,
Last one was a woman with Alziemers that went swimming in one of the creeks,
Found her clothes, But not her, She had wandered away from the place where she lived,
She was quite clear that you dont swim up there, any where,

Re: Salt Water Crocs in the Whitsundays

When I was running tourist boats in the Whitsundays, one of our boats offered boom netting. This was extremely popular.

However we only offered this well out into Whitsunday passage, or off Whitehaven beach or similar areas. We would never put people in the much less clear water of somewhere like Cid Harbour.

Police earlier said they would not provide details on the condition of the man until they had spoken to his next of kin, who officers have not yet been able to locate.

The attack comes after a two tourists were mauled by sharks in the same area in September.

Queensland Fisheries killed four tiger sharks in the area, including one up to 3.7 metres long, after the attacks on Tasmanian woman Justine Barwick, 46 and Melbourne schoolgirl Hannah Papps, 12.

Ms Barwick, a mother-of-two was bitten on her left thigh while snorkelling. The next day, Hannah, who was holidaying with her father and sister, received a life-threatening wound to her right leg while swimming in shallow water the harbour. Her injuries were so severe, her leg later had to be amputated.

Jonathan Clarke, of Sea Shepherd Australia told The Guardian in September that the area was known among Whitsunday locals as “no-go zone” for swimming and that drum lines designed to deter sharks were often left for days without bait, creating a “false sense security

Funny, that. Jim and I always thought boom netting was "trolling for sharks"

********

Another thing we saw that bemused us was a resort dumping it's garbage off the pier at dusk, right next to the tourist swimming area, so the tourists could watch the feeding frenzy, and possibly (?) become part of it.

Oh, yes, the tourist boats going up the rivers, with a skipper who stops and holds out a long pole with a dead chook on it, to teach the crocs to (a) associate boats with humans and (b) food with humans! The crocs probably already know we're yummy if tenderized first, though. We humans are our own worst enemies!

Well, methinks there's a maneater that's taken up residence in Cid Harbour. Life is starting to imitate art, with the art being "Jaws". Three attacks in short order; one fatal and two with "life changing" injuries. Time to deploy exploding scuba tanks!
