Sailing Tampa Bay

Hello,
We're chartering a 31' Hunter for the day out of Central Yacht Basin St Petersburg.
Does anyone have any suggestions of some good anchorages or areas that are better for just cruising ( less traffic ) Were going the Monday after 4th of July,
Hopefully we'll miss the holiday crowd, any suggestion would be appreciated.
Thanks

Re: Sailing Tampa Bay

Get a very early start on the day to enjoy cooler temperatures and then keep a VERY close eye on the weather as the day goes on. Things can get very stormy very quickly with mid to late afternoon thunderstorms that can come through from either the east or west.

If it's only one day, you are going to downtown Tampa or Davis Island for a late lunch or out and under the skyway bridge to one of the closer cays and back to St Pete. You need at least three days to see more of the area. Click image for larger version

Re: Sailing Tampa Bay

One day charter? The time you have to be back at the marina will be a big consideration. Also, what are your preferences? Sounds like a quiet spot away from the city to anchor for lunch?

You might think about Egmont Key. Not too far and the island is only accessible by boat. Nice beaches to walk around and large enough you should be able to find a reasonably quiet lee for anchoring. There is no harbor as such so any big boats nearby can rock you with the wakes.

Your final choice will depend on the wind and weather. Be flexible in your plans. If you have to have the boat back by 5-6 I wouldn't go more than 10-15 miles away maximum.

Manatee River if you have time. There's a great anchorage right at the mouth, by Desoto National Memorial.

I used to live on the Manatee, great place. Long for a round trip day sail, but great for a weekend.
