Sailing south on the loop

I'm a new sailer. And I wanted to do the loop. Going down the mississippi from the great lakes. So do I have to sail from detroit to Chicago to get to the mississippi or is there another way. Apparently the erie canal will close soon.

Detroit up to Lake Huron to Macinac Straits down Lake Michigan to Chicago. Wait until next year. I wouldn't do it in November.

I think the question is missing the main point - what type of boat is yours? Motor, sailing, rowing?

It's good that you're starting to plan early for next year. Just remeber you have to drop the mast to get off Lake Michigan. It might be easier for ypouto go via the Erie next spring after it opens, but you'll still have to drop your mast to run the canal. JMHO

If you're going from Detroit to Chicago, you're not going to be anywhere near the Erie Canal, which ends in Towanda NY.

Re: Sailing south on the loop

FYI: The Erie Canal is a historic canal in upstate New York that runs east–west between the Hudson River and Lake Erie.

The Erie does not approach Detroit.

If you wish to sail you will need to navigate the Great Lakes north from the Motor City and thence south to the Windy City.

Have a grand adventure, starting next summer.

Re: Sailing south on the loop

To get from Lake Michigan to the Mississippi you have to go through either Chicago or Calumet which is a few miles south. Either way there are low bridges to go under so the mast must come down. Even some power boats have trouble with clearance. If you do the whole loop you'll come back to the Lakes via the Erie Canal, there are low bridges there too.
