SAILING FROM BRAZIL,FRENCH GUYANA,SURINAM & GUYANA

Hi,

We would like to sail next year from Salvador de Bahia (Brazil ) to the Caribean , with stops in Brazil (north of Amzon riber) , French Guyana, Suriname and Guyana.

Can you recoment me some crusing Guides, and where is best getting them online.

Any other knowledge or advise on this cruising area will be great.

Many thanks,

Jordi

There are a lot of Dutch boats doing this as all these places used to be Dutch once. There must be Dutch boats with you in Salvador so just pay them a visit and ask away.

ciao!
Nick.

Imray has a new brazil guide.

I found the British Admiralty pilots to be very good for navigation and pilotage info for this area, but any info on ports is usually way out of date. Noonsite is usually the best souce for port and immigration info.

The areas you are looking into have shoal waters that extend for miles and miles and can have serious issues with large debris like collosal logs out very far off shore. Keep a good watch...

You did not say when you are planning to leave, but if you are sailing from Salvador at this time of the year and will be bypassing most of northern Brazil, time your departure according to the cold fronts (go with them) and head well offshore. I was stuck in Salvador for a while awaiting favorable conditions, but then again it is not a bad bad place to get stuck on. I sailed straight to Trinidad due the high crime to boats in Guiana and Suriname.

?? I have not yet heard a single report of crime to visiting cruisers in Surinam, while I have heard hundreds of reports from boats that have been there. Also, Noonsite has no incidents reported but does have reports stating it is very safe to visit.

cheers,
Nick.
