I think there are two weather windows to cross the line in this end of the Pacific. One is to leave Cairns before the end of Nov. See http://blog.mailasail.com/sylph for Bobs voyage direct to Japan from Cairns. The other window is in April. The Melbourne to Osaka race starts in March but has had a few dramas in the past clearing Aus.
This year looks to be an El Nino year so research the start of past cyclone seasons in El Nino years for a heads up on when to set out before the Wet srason sets in in Aus.
