Safe Passage ???

On a scale of 1 to 10...

1 - being boarded by bearded blackhearts, shot and dumped overboard,
or being used as target practice and sunk by local govt patrols...

10 - being warmly greeted, given fish, and invited to a cookout,
where I am NOT on the menu...

Please rate these two (to start with) passages:

MarMara Sea transit from Istanbul to Black Sea =

Kerch Straits transit to Azov Sea =

15-17M American Sailing Yacht flying Old Glory

Padi, what's your point? Is this a political statement? If so, please ask about solar battery charging or tropical cocktails instead. If not, what is your point?

Meant no political color to it at all Keith... Honestly...
My point was to illicit factual input from those that have sailed those areas listed as to the current situations there, as there was about a 40% chance I would be involved in such a passage at the time. That has pretty much fallen through, but I'm always open to more input on conditions and what to expect if push comes to shove and I find myself faced with such a journey.

Black Sea isn’t worth the trouble

It’s filthy , the geography is poor and it’s full of countries that are paperwork intensive

Prepare your paperwork like de rating certificate , invitations and visas in Istanbul
Don’t go anywhere without an agent with boots on the ground

Check your insurance company , many refuse coverage

Good input, thanks Slug...
It wasn't 100% a pleasure trip, although I would expect there to be a certain amount.
Thought I might have met 'the Right One', and were discussing a flight here for her, and a sail back to meet her family and say finals before we came back here to live.
The passage both ways would have taken us through all those places I mentioned to arrive in Muripol', closest port to her City, actually just a short train ride away.
Then return.

I'm sure we would have seen some amazing beautiful places along the course, but that would not have been the primary goal for the passage.
Personally, my dream is to spend a season in the South Pacific Islands, hopping over to NZ, then North to Hawaii, and back to California at the end of the season.

Bruce

PS: Back to 'looking' again...

If you wish to visit Russia choose St. Petersburg

Do your paperwork in Helsinki

In Russia you must be invited to the country by a Russian . The common procedure is to be invited by the Baltic Sailing Club St. Petersburg

http://balticsail.ru/

Your agent used this invitation to process your visa

Rules always change , don’t believe anything on the internet

all in one season? interesting. This would be a difficult and hard sail for two seasons - but maybe I'm just a pussy

Our books have gotten 5 star reviews on Amazon. Several readers have written "I never thought I would go on a circumnavigation, but when I read these books, I was right there in the cockpit with Vinni and Carsten"

Re: Safe Passage ???

Hmm... Perhaps I'm in error on my calcs.
Getting a bit late to go this year (damn!) with all the prep that would need to be done.
My thought was to depart in late April after the big blows are over.
30 days max from California to Marquesas port entry.
Be in Society Islands early June, late June thru August sailing and diving Westward.
Maybe come up a little shy of NZ, but hopefully at least to New Caledonia.
Then a month North to Hawaii, and a month East back to West Coast.
Tried to enter all that into OpenCPN the other day, but chose too many WP's along the way, and it refused to compute. Need to do it again, but a leg at a time, instead of all one long routing.
I was probably in error on the distance/time from NC North to Hawaii.
I should try working backwards in my routing and see how that works out.

Time is running out, in more ways than one. Not all too pleased about that.
Had planned to have this accomplished by now. S**t still happens...

Thanks for the comment.

Re: Safe Passage ???

Good thoughts Slug.
Would have had a Russian on the boat bringing her home, but I suppose the govt would also want that documented ahead of time.
Like the idea of working through the Countries' Yacht Clubs.
Great place to find some boots on the ground.

Thanks for your input.
Like I said, looks like a wash this time,
but expecting a miracle here at some point.
Probably NOT from Asia at this point, but one never knows.

Thanks for your input,

Bruce

Re: Safe Passage ???

Hi Bruce,

Reality check for you. NZ, New Cal, Fiji, French Poly have all closed their borders.

Plan for 2021. Panama to French P +- 25 days at sea. Lots to see in FP... Cyclone Season where? Not pretty if you get caught.
