Rudder Bearing Question

Can the condition of the rudder bearing on a boat with a spade rudder be ascertained when the boat is in the water or must it be hauled?

Thank you for your input.

Re: Rudder Bearing Question

Yes. Dive the rudder. Tie a line to it as low as possible. Bring a port and starboard tail to the cockpit. Pull on each tail, and you'll know what "slop" you are dealing with. You may need to move the helm from hard port to hard starboard. Good luck.

Re: Rudder Bearing Question

Bring some “c” clamps in your dive. Watch what happens inside the boat if you push up hard. Leak? Put a piece of metal bar between the top of the rudder and the hull ...you can put something on the end to spread the load and pull the bar down...then push up. I’ve seen wire eat quadrants or jump out of the grove.
Check everything...it’s very difficult to do much at sea.
Clunks now only get worse in higher seas. Cable pulleys should not wobble.
Lots to check ...good luck.

Re: Rudder Bearing Question

How is it done in yacht yard when the boat is on the hard?

Re: Rudder Bearing Question

Disconnect the cables or push/pull and give it a good shake back and forwards and if it rattles the bearings are worn.

Not necessarily. On one boat I shook the top bearing holder was moving on the cockpit floor.

Re: Rudder Bearing Question

If you need new plastic bearings IGUS is the place. Any material and many sizes available. Plain, flanged, washers. Easily modified.
