Replacing a damaged mast- Need help!

My husband and I are looking for help and opinions on replacing our mast on our Stamas 44 sailboat. It will be pulled today and on inspection by the rigger the other day it most likely will need to be replaced because of damage to the spreader attachments. This was caused by an accident that we are unable to discuss at this time due to insurance issues. What we would like to know is if anyone knows of any salvage places for masts or what companies you can recommend for mast replacement. The rigger also mentioned placing a sleeve on the damaged area (he did not recommend) but wanted to know if anyone has had this done. Our mast is 61.3 feet, base is 5.5"x 9.5", about 25.75" circumference. We believe it was manufactured by Kenyon. (Will find out for sure today).
Thanks for your help!!!

I suggest you contact "Charleston Spar".

Sleeving a damaged or broken mast is a common practice, and will work fine if done well.

Re: Replacing a damaged mast- Need help!

With the hurricanes that hit the south this year, there are likely to be a number of masts available at very good prices from boats that were damaged or destroyed. I picked up a boom for my boat under this exact circumstance from a hurricane 10 years ago. I suggest that you put the word out on various sailing forums, especially if there is one for your boat.

Try Klacko spars in Oakville Ontario Canada.
Excellent firm, ships masts all over the world, great product.

I thought these prices looked reasonable as I have been researching repair/vs replace. I have no other information, just found them online

I believe those boats had isomat spars?

Is the insurance paying? Order a new mast from your rigger. Maybe check some references first.

Re: Replacing a damaged mast- Need help!

Try Ballenger Spar Systems, if you choose to go with a new mast and standing rigging.
Their address is 215 Walker St, Watsonville, California, 95074.
His pricing and quality are outstanding.
If you are going to the trouble to remove your rig, spend the money and replace all of the little things that can cause the mast to come down.
I have completed two mast replacements on two different boats with Buzz Ballenger's help. The fits were perfect in both cases. Shipping will be an issue, but your new mast will end up "tagging along" with another sailboat moving from California to Virginia.

Ballenger does outstanding work, but he is usually pretty backlogged, and shipping cross country will be a factor.

There are a couple of spar shops in Annapolis and the often can get you a used mast that will fit.

Re: Replacing a damaged mast- Need help!

In your place my deccesion would depend on whether insurance covering the cost or it was out of my pocket.

If I was paying I would try to do the repair on my own in the least expensive way but without compromise of strength.

If the insurance company was paying I would hire a pro but still try to do it cost effectively. It's only fair.

That being said.

- Sleeving, if done properly is zero concern. My mast came new on the boat in two sections joined by a sleeve. It's a common option with larger masts where shipping a very long section can be prohibitively expensive.

- As noted, after the recent hurricanes there may be a lot of good, used masts on the market. I know a salvage yard in FL, Monkey Fist Marine in Green Cove Springs recently pulled a very nice mast off a Kaufman 44 that might be a fit for you.

Re: Replacing a damaged mast- Need help!

GrammaC9,

I agree with skipmac. Our mast is sistered to get its height, and there have been no problems with that join. Our boom was sistered after it broke, and it, too is fine. In that case, the rigger tried at first to sell us a new Selden boom, but when he realized we wouldn't go that route, he miraculously found that he had a bunch of material (other broken spars and booms) at home, with which to sister the boom. The repaired boom is stronger than the original construction. He did a good job.

What I'm getting at is that your repaired mast could actually be a better deal for you than a new one.

Re: Replacing a damaged mast- Need help!

Your mast can be repaired as good as new--but it requires a specialist in welding alloys such as would be employed in the manufacture of aircraft, and it would need to be done in a proper workshop.

Masts can be fixed more cheaply, such as by sleeving. Sometimes it may be cheaper to find a second hand mast in good order--or to buy a new one.

Nothing that pertains to yacht rigging is cheap unfortunately.

Re: Replacing a damaged mast- Need help!

Sounds like your mast can be repaired/sleeved. Best option. Also quite a few spars on eBay. Do a search for Marine parts-Masts.

Re: Replacing a damaged mast- Need help!

Keep in mind that most masts over 40' or so are sleeved anyway. They cannot easily ship anything longer.
