Re: Replace the mast? Replace the boat?

SV Wanderer it is a shame this mast is seven feet short; it seems a good deal.
Cheers

Re: Replace the mast? Replace the boat?

Given the situation and respecting the decision to keep the boat another alternative would be to buy a second P35 in poor condition just for the mast. The condition of the boat would not matter very much. The cost differences between a whole boat and a new mast would drive the decision. Oh yes, then what to do with boat #2.

Re: Replace the mast? Replace the boat?

Wanderer, if i recall there is a large marine consignment yard near Foster rigging in Quincy. Mass Marine Parts? Perhaps they have a mast you can replace it with?

Also, there is a man named Dwayne Melcher at Admiral Hill Marina in Chelsea who has refit and scrapped a few boats. He may know where you can source a used replacement.

Finally, consider consulting an engineer and machinist to repair/sleeve it. This is probably the most cost effective approach.

Re: Replace the mast? Replace the boat?

For inspirational purposes:

This is a short clip from the film Around the World with Jean de Sud, about Yves Gélinas solo circumnavigation in an Alberg 30. It shows how he repairs his mast with a sleeve and steps it himself with a pole and tabernacle. Great movie!

Re: Replace the mast? Replace the boat?

Sleeve the mast - as pointed out, any new Selden mast will be sleeved.
At 35 ft, if you enjoy cruising, you’ll likely swap boats in a couple years….and you’ll never recover the cost of a new mast.

Re: Replace the mast? Replace the boat?

Hi I would sleeve in a heavy extrusion where the damage is, weld it in place with a new spreader bracket. I've seen a number of old masts built this way.
Do you have a picture of the damaged spreader section?

Re: Replace the mast? Replace the boat?

How about cutting out the dented bit and sleeving? Your sails might need tailoring (shortening the luffs), and that may or may not be expensive, and you’ll need to adjust the rigging to suit (which cd be inexpensive if you just replace the bottom swages).
Worth considering, I would think...
