Rename or not?

Last year I bought a CS 27.

It was an impulse buy, bought more for the spot at a local yacht club than the boat itself.

The PO was selling her because he had cancer, from which he passed away a couple of months later.

When we closed the deal he said: "She is a good boat, she never let me down."

Re: Rename or not?

Easy:

If the name isn't stupid or a pun, keep it, don't rename.

If you have a clever name or a pun in mind as a new name: Hit yourself on the head with the boom until the thought is gone and don't rename it.

If the boat has a stupid name or pun, rename it to something sane.

The boat isn't defined by the name, but the adventures and memories it offers to you. Don't create memories of being the idiotic guy sitting on "Stiff Ripples" or "Makin’ Luff"

Re: Rename or not?

THis is completely your choice. Boats and ships change names all the time. You could choose to give her a new name that appeals to just you. You could make her a memorial to the previous owner, keeping the name and adding "in memory of." You could go anywhere between those two points.

We have a neighbor who named his boat the "Xantipe." Greek for "quarrelsome wife." Now that took nerve...

Re: Rename or not?

OK, I'll bite, what's the current name?

If you do change it, make sure you do the proper name changing ceremony and remove any items in/on the boat w/the old name.

I happen to really enjoy both silly and pun names! Why take away anyone's joy in a silly joke?

OH, OH, OH...I know...I know! That's an easy one.

Your boat, you name it.

Unless you don't plan to keep it. Because when you peel off the old name, there's going to be a ghost of the old name left behind, and you really want to have a plan for how you're going to deal with that.

"KnotMaster"

I think it is cute.
The PO fancied himself a knot expert.
Nothing to peel off, just the Canadian registration numbers.

I think I will leave it alone.

So did "The Office."

Google "boat renaming ceremony" - easier for you to find it than me doing it for you. John Vigor is the author.

My PO took the old name with him for his new boat. I would have changed it anyway.

Good party, too.

Re: Rename or not?

I've done both, but I always follow the legal and Neptune's process if and when I change it.. to be safe with the sea God..

Re: Rename or not?

I look forward to one day getting to rename a boat, specifically so I can do the ceremony. My wife made me promise not to name it "There Are No Drugs On This Boat", which is disappointing but hard to argue with.

Normally I would avoid renaming a boat (I'm just a teeny bit superstitious) but our most recent purchase has a hopelessly unpronounceable name which immediately led to all sorts confusion with the local VMR.

The boat was also renamed by the PO and allowed to rot to near ruin under the name so there's a feeling that renaming will be a fresh start.

I've been involved with the ceremony in the past and it was great fun. Therefore, we are planning an absolute snorter of a party in two weeks, the whole marina will be invited to take part in the renaming ceremony. I figure that should start the new boat on a better footing for her next phase in her life. (You will probably hear the collective groan when the new name is revealed, I like a bit of word play.)

So, if you plan to rename, don't rush the name choice (it took us nearly two months and quite a few false starts), make sure you follow the ceremony and make it a fun event.

Unless the neighbour lives in Greece that name must be a total PITA with the local VMR.
