Remove old lettering from Sail Bag?

I bought a used main sail cover to replace my worn out cover.

The old boat name is on the cover, and I'd like to remove it. Does anyone have any ideas how?

It looks like a heavy duty fabric paint.

Anyone have any experience in this?

The paint is embedded into the fabric, so little chance of removal. Better chance of covering up.

Re: Remove old lettering from Sail Bag?

You can't get it all out even by using really harsh chemicals. The ink embeds into the cloth fibers and that "color changes" them even when the lettering is removed by wear or chemicals.

Added to that is the sun bleaching the surrounding fabric. No matter what you do the lettering will still be visible.

There are options. Cheapest and simplest is to stitch on a cover panel with the new name on it.

You could also paint the blue into a rectangle, and then use sticky-backed sail repair cloth to cut your name out of to apply onto the blue. White would have most contrast.

Thanks for the replies.

I'm gonna go with your advice and just panel over it. This lettering is like road paint. I'd need a grinder to get it off

A match would work. But I'd recommend doing it on the dock and not on the boat. Just kidding. lol Maybe you could rename your boat? lol

There are other options.

Go talk to your local screenprinter and see what it would cost for him to print a solid background over the letters then print your boat name and a fancy border around the background area on top of that.

You'll still be able to see the outline of the letters underneath when up close, but from a 10' distance no one else will.

You are obviously fairly fussy about things being 'right' (I can relate .

Either paint out the panel, then a new name on top, or better still, with decent opaque cloth, sew a new panel over the old one, with the name on it.

You will never get that paint out of the fabric with anything that won't affect the fabric - even if it was put on a week ago.
