I am often amused when the sea teaches someone that being able to write the check for the boat and every electronic doo-dad, is not a certificate of mastery. Most often it is the powerboat crowd that demonstrates this, but sometimes a sailor gets a dose.

I spent quite a few years in the assistance towing business, and many more as a firefighter/paramedic.... Were it not for fools, neither job would have been very fruitful. Sorry if the above doesn't sound very moderator-ish, but I have zero sympathy for the OP.

I have had my arse handed to me at sea on a few occasions; but only when I had to step up into the lifeboat, did I ever fail to bring (most) of the boat in to port. If you want an eye-opener, work as a delivery skipper for a bit and see what people expect you to put to sea in..... and survive to the destination.

Somewhere back in one of the 430+ posts, an analogy to flying and race car driving was made. Flying, sailing, and racing can all be done by someone with a little training and luck..... In ideal conditions. But when SHTF, the untrained, and inexperienced usually fail quite spectacularly.... And often deadly (my friend Jay comes to mind)...

Thats a mistake, with a 9 volts flat batery and no autopilot and bouncing in the waves and exhausted , hard to do nothing with the jib, as Boatman point in a previous post, furling the jib to exposed just a crap of jib is enough to sail confy to the coast , even with just the main, just saying...

I gave up after 15 pages of posts, but
wanted to tell about my fuel system on
my K41.

I had a 9 gallon tank which was
situated above and would gravity feed
the engine. This tank was fed from 90
gallons tanked in the bilge. A few minutes of the
transfer pump filled the 9 gallon tank every
18 hours or so.

In several years of sailing
and motoring, there was never a need to
bleed the engine. No worries about a
fuel pump giving out either.

Also had dual Racors valved in parallel
so one could be emptied/cleaned while
the other was in service, between the
9 gallon tank and the engine.

Don't know why this isn't common.

But I don't understand why he would not have had a storm jib he could have put up?

And if I had water in my fuel got the thing going why would you run it 2 hours I would check the bowl every 10 mins for water.

Shame the OP felt so overwhelmed to leave his boat , it would be nice to know if he had any sleep in that 4 days.

Even if he had thrown the anchor out full length it may have grabbed and not damaged the reef, or got his boat back.

I have a Baja filter on its way now from ebay. I have always been concerned about getting fuel problems at the time I'm relying on the motor the most.

See if you can connect two filters in series; worth the cost. As you cruise to remote areas, expect fuel to be contaminated to increase profits.

Yer well Im off to Tasmania for 4 months next year and its remote down there

Do you have any evidence to blame the locals for anything? In my understanding as far as the published facts go, the only intervention of the (poor) local community will be to pay for the removal of a boat from the reef. I would save the adjectives for the owner of the boat if he dos not pay for the damage as he would in his home country.

In addition, it's an abandoned boat. "The locals" (I don't think any of us would fly in to do it) are entitled to salvage what they can.

I thought of your friend Jay also, but not in a negative way. We will never know what happened.

I don't know about other boats, but my boat even with a _new_ mainsail barely crawls (if any) without a headsail up. Headsail is for driving and mainsail for balance..

mine must be the exception then. we were at 5KTs with just a mainsail on our pre-purchase cruise. highly unlikely that i am the only one....

How bouncy was it? I didn't see anything indicating rough weather. But you're right, exhausted is no time to take on a priority 2 job (and that's where I'd put it--on my boat as presently configured. That's going to change.

I read that as "scrap of jib." Is that what you meant? My boat does not sail either well or comfortably with just the main up, so that is influencing my thoughts here. Also my crap roller furler, which makes it an "all or nothing" proposition with the headsail.
