Re: register boat trailer

It should be a mild hassle. Not real bad. You will probably need to know how much the trailer weighs. Usually 700 lbs to 1,000 lbs. And it's capacity, which should be on a plate on the tongue area of the trailer. Oh, also the manufacturer's name of the trailer.

When this happened to me they took my word and put that on the trailer title but I expected to have more verification.

Don't know if I caught the clerk in a good mood or not.

Good luck

Re: register boat trailer

Well, not sure how each state does, but the first thing I would do, is call the DMV and simply ask them. It'll depend on if it's the factory trailer or a custom one. If it's a previously-registered trailer in your state, they may be able to give you more information on what might be needed, or some way to contact the prior registrant. If it's a custom trailer, you may be able to get it registered as Homemade / Home Built with less trouble.

Re: register boat trailer

Don't know the law in your state
But here in NJ trailers of this size
Do Not have titles
But to register you need a
Notarized Bill Of Sale
With the VIN number on said bill
With these in hand it's no problem
If the bill of sales is not notarized
You can't register
So if I were you I'd have this in hand before going to the DMV
Cheers

Re: register boat trailer

This must happen often enough. I have had to do it at least tree times in Michigan and Ohio. It was not a problem. Scout the trailer for VIN or SR-#, maker's name. If your DMV needs weight, go to a truck scale and get a certificate if necessary or otherwise concoct a believable number. If it was bundled in the bill of sale for the boat, bring along the documents.
