Re: "Reality" Youtube Sailing Channels

Recently, I read that some lucky attendees at the Boat Show stood in line for an hour or two to get the autographs of these Vloggers. How exciting! That must have been the thrill of a lifetime, almost as good as getting an autograph from one of the Kardashians. Of course, I couldn’t help wondering if maybe one of the “ladies” gave them a little flash of the T&A that made them so famous! That would make it all worthwhile!

Even though the world is a sad and sometimes rough place, where children go to bed hungry, have diseases like Malaria or Polio that could be prevented or cured with relatively inexpensive medicine, need clean drinking water, shoes, and clothes, isn’t it so much better and just to give lots of your disposable income to some talented exhibitionists so they can frolic on a sailboat in the tropics. That seems like a no brainer!

Also, those Vloggers deserve your money for all the expert film editing they do. They spend hours earning your support. In fact, I bet the major studios and film producers are waiting in line to employ these Vloggers in the motion pictures industries when they quit sailing for a living, forget about all the fools who went to film school or spent time actually working in the business on land with experienced mentors. What do they know about the intricacies of YouTube and Patreon?

1. Do you watch any of these YouTube channels yourselves?

First time was today. I clicked on one of the suggestions above. ‘The Wynns’ and watched for a few minutes, a guy with poofy hair and blinding white teeth talking about his sponsorship arrangements. Meh… not for me.

I mostly watch Wind Hippie. She’s a Mainer whose parents cruised.

Re: "Reality" Youtube Sailing Channels

I have watched a lot of these but am looking for some new ones. Some are pretty good, others started good and went south for my take. My list of the ones I have watched nearly all of the episodes from and my thoughts as well as how I would rank them:

- Sailing La Vagabonde - feel like there’s a lot of hate for these guys here but I enjoy them. Seem to tell it like it is and enjoy Riley’s sailing. There are highs and lows, specifically the low of the perpetual Bahamas life that has now came to an end.
- Sailing Parlay Revival - like the boat fixing up and the surf culture being a sailor/surfer myself. Wish they traveled more but hopefully that’s coming.
- Sailing Millennial Falcon - These two are so nice, it is refreshing. It is a good mix of cruising and boat fixing for me. Definitely shows the true life of sailing and things going wrong when they think everything is ready to do a passage.
- Sail Life - Love the build and the technical details and think Mads is great. Must support the Danish heritage.
- Gone with the Wynns - good video quality and cinematography, wife and I get annoyed with their personalities and decisions. Miss the cats!
- MJ Sailing - like the build of the first boat and catamaran but harder to grab my attention for some reason. The closing song will be forever stuck in my head and would be a patron if I could get their videos without this ending.
- Sailing Uma - this was my wife and I’s first and favorite channel. However, we are both super over this ever since they crossed the Atlantic. The build stage is over, COVID never existed in their videos, and it is essentially a hiking channel most the time. If you need a drinking game, play the “take a drink every time they say “absolutely gorgeous/beautiful” and you will be hammered in no time” game.
- Cat Great Circle - Tbh, I just watch some to see the Outremer 55. Love the boat and how they outfitted it but not really a fan of the content.

Next for us is likely Sailing Zatara and maybe Project Atticus (we tried this when also trying the Wynns and the Wynns production at the start of their sailing won it for us). Erik Aanderaa will be on my list from time to time as well. Will keep an eye here for any other recommendations.

Sure I watch them. Whenever I have downtime, forums and YouTube are how I relax, or with a book. And I have Patreoned after a particularly valuable episode. I really like Emily and Clarke's adventure, especially the video tutorial on mixing lithium and lead acid in a single bank.

Disclaimer: I am a You Tuber with a Looper Channel "The Adventures of Yorksie and Me"

We watched as many of these channels as we could find in preparation for doing our own.

The sailing channels that border on soft core porn are where the money is alright. So many of them are so over the top stupid... The wind is blowing 10 knots with light rain and they are in weather gear">foul weather gear and harnesses... Or she is pulling the anchor wearing a pound of makeup and a string bikini with oversaturated color correction to make her complexion perfect.

There is a LOT of money being made on these channels by these folks. If it brings new younger boaters into the hobby it's a good thing I suppose. Almost all our viewers are 50+ according to the analytics.

Some folks are doing this to get a tax deduction for the production equipment, or to write off a percentage of the cruising expenses.

The 2 brits sailing around the world; MJ Sailing; Sailing Millennial Falcon -- Our personal favorites. For all the reasons cited here by other posters.

It is LOT of work to produce a decent video. Approximately 10 to 12 hours for ten minutes. It takes around $5,000 worth of equipment to have decent production quality, and the learning curve to shoot, and do pre and post production is very steep. In addition there are monthly fees for royalty free music, stock footage, and so forth.

Being honest about what it's really like to cruise combined with our refusal to turn my lovely and gracious significant other into a sex symbol results in not having thousands and thousands of subscribers or making any significant income from it.

That being said it's worth it for the gracious people who comment on the videos, or pulling into a new marina and being recognized.

Re: "Reality" Youtube Sailing Channels

What the e-beggars don’t understand is that some people were raised with certain values, including hard work, education, dignity, privacy, self-reliance, and self-respect.
Celebrity is not a traditional value. Providing public entertainment while soliciting contributions is not a traditional value. Going on adventures supported by others is not a traditional value. Many would consider those values to be shallow and superficial.

You lose, or have already lost, something of the core of yourself when you resort to those activities for money. Maybe you never had it. Sponsors who support that activity show that they lack values. Viewers who support those activities show that they lack those values.

If you think it is o.k. to solicit money from viewers to fund your boating adventures, then a certain number of people will disagree with your values. Passing it off as compensation for amateur video work does not change the character of the activity. How you can actually retain your dignity while you beg for money from the public is your own problem. Human beings have a tremendous capacity to fool themselves and justify their activities, no matter how disgraceful they may be.

Why not both? It wouldn't be the first time.

Re: "Reality" Youtube Sailing Channels

I've watched quite a few, seems like they all start out good but then move away from a lot of the, how tos and diy that I like to watch. I also like it when they actually go somewhere and put out a lot of info on tips and tricks for checking into a specific place, or a good place to provision or refit.

Most move away from all this and it just becomes a life style change. One minute its here's what it's like to sail the the Marquesas, the next it's look at the cool condo one of our patrons put us up in.

All I can really think to say here is lol. Completely disagree with you in every way but can already tell you are the 60+ year old sailor who is stuck in your ways so there’s zero point to convince you otherwise. Hopefully there’s some sensibility for the other folks out there reading this to know it’s non sense.

Let me guess: you are an e-beggar or you support other e-beggars.
Age is not the issue. It has always been about character, integrity and values.

Social media has not changed people. It has just given a voice to trashy, talentless people with no values who previously would have been ignored, or not supported. Now they can gain an audience who can marvel at their lack of character and integrity, and then send them money so they can see more.

Your own profile, or lack of a profile, says a lot about you. Part of being a man is standing behind what you say in public. You have no identifiable information – no photos, no location, no occupation. That may be your right, but what does that say about you?

I don't have much of a profile either. I don't think that is a bad thing
