Programming Portable VHF
Hi, I have a portable that I don't use for marine use, but will handle VHF maritime mobile band frequencies, The channels I plan on adding are 9,12,13,14,15,16,20A,22A and NOAA. Your thoughts? Thanks

I'm not sure what you're asking?

Re: Programming Portable VHF
He is probably referring to a radio which is not marketed as a marine only handheld, e.g., a ham radio capable of use on marine frequencies.
If so, we need to know what brand and model to refer him to the proper programming tool although it should be apparent with a simple internet search.

It occurred to me maybe he's asking for a more complete list of needed channels. Maybe like 68, 72, etc....

Re: Programming Portable VHF
He states he doesn't use it for marine use and then states that he wants to add several specific marine frequencies.
I'm not sure what he is asking.

Re: Programming Portable VHF
I believe the OP is asking which channels he should add.
The answer is, of course -- whichever ones you use.
16
then CG working channel(s) (around here, 67, 23)
VTS channels (around here, 12, 14)
Bridge channels
Weather/safety channels
Harbor/marina channels you use (around here, 80, 68, 69, 14)
Other special channels (Queen's Harbourmaster Portsmouth, 11 and 13; Lulworth Naval Firing Range Control, 08)
Intership channels you use (I use 06, 08, 67, 69 mostly)
The list kind of goes on and on . . . You just have to figure out yourself, which ones you need the most.

Re: Programming Portable VHF
If you've got the room, program them all! If not, then tell us where you'll be cruising and we can help you pick.

Re: Programming Portable VHF
OOPS! I should have given more info. I own my portable, but it is programmedl for work by our radio tech. He said he can also program mine to the marine frequencies, so I can also use it on my boat. I'll check to see how many channels I can add. I will be mostly sailing in SW FL. Thanks again.
