I love camping. I’ve spent plenty of time in tents in the far back country of Canada. My boat — almost any cruising boat — is luxury compared to this.

I dunno, lots of folks using RVs -- perhaps closer to cruising boats -- say they are camping, too. And then there are the "outfitter" camps, where tents might be involved but the level of service can sometimes almost be hotel-like.

I've spent time in tents on mountaintops. It usually rained or snowed... or both.

I guess that was the "pressure water" coming down.

I've always thought that RV's only claimed camping status because you aren't actually in your home and most appear incapable of being away from an electrical outlet or sewage connection for more than a couple of days. Obviously the term "camping" conjures different images to different people, perhaps the prefix "wilderness" tacked onto camping would clarify things? I prefer "wilderness" cruising sort of thing.

There does seem to be a tight correlation between boats without pressure water and refrigeration and ending up being a single hander.../QUOTE]

Naah.. Its a correlation of being crap at picking the right partner in the first place..

None of this is camping. An RV is a home on wheels, much like any cruising level boat is a home on the water. Those outfitter camps are, at best, glamping.

Neither are camping.

Now that is camping .

Re: Pressure water - overrated?

I probably should have clarified that this topic was aimed at small/medium boats, not huge boats with 500 gallon tanks or the ability to make over 100 gallons a day without breaking a sweat. Obviously, in those cases, water conservation is far less a concern!

Re: Pressure water - overrated?

I suppose defining camping is like defining boating or insisting upon which one is best.

Racing
  • dinghy
  • one-design
  • PHRF
  • open
  • distance vs. around cans
Cruising
  • dinghies
  • day sailing
  • overnight
  • coastal
  • far
  • live aboard
Multi vs mono

Power vs. sail

I've camped on a ledge on a big wall and in a motor home and everything in between. I've sailed dinghies and cruised my cat and a raced and other stuff. I've fished off power boats and had a good day. They were all good. Pressure water is like that, I think. It depends.

Re: Pressure water - overrated?

Back to the original question, if no one minds.

Our boat has a total of 23 pumps, not including the spares that aren’t in service. We bought the boat in 1996 and the last pump that needed to be repaired was our fresh water pump, which failed about three years ago.

I consider having pressured fresh water to be a civil convenience although we also have a foot pump at the galley - the water for the foot pump flows through an additional charcoal filter, ensuring that the water tastes great.

Perhaps we are very liberal with our water consumption but our water maker easily keeps up with our usage. We consider it to be an important part of our level of comfort.

My wife and I enjoy camping and do not feel deprived if we have to aggressively conserve water. Regardless, we prefer it when it’s not a significant concern.

When we’re at our home in Southern California, we’re almost militant about conserving water as we know well that we’re living in a desert.

Fair winds and calm seas.

Woof!

We've got 11, plus 1 spare. (Ah. Not counting fuel lift and injection pumps.)

23?

Why do I get the subtle feeling that someone is implying that it’s better to be minimalistic. No one in particular but ...

i have done plenty of that minimalist stuff growing up ( hand pump well in the yard eventually plumbed in a sink hand pump in the house.)
I feel I have worked long enough to earn and appreciate the little comforts.
