A couple of people already mentioned living on an island. May I suggest you do some internet research for American Samoa? (I'm anchored there now.)

US Territory, US dollar economy, US laws (mostly). Your US passport, and that of your daughter, allows you to immigrate and live here visa-free with no end-date. Corn is mostly unheard about over here. With a little looking around you can get a place on the windward side, and the trade winds should negate the grass problem. The country is bi-lingual (English/Samoan) but schools and government facilities operate in English. Even have a US Post office.

Your a mechanic? Great! As a boater, I'll flat out state that this place could really use a cruiser-friendly diesel mechanic, so you'll at least have a sporadic job 'till you get established.
