I knew there was a name for this but tried to look it up a few years ago and didn't find it. Now I feel so enlightened.

Regarding complaints about the use of acronyms or initialisms in posts, sometimes it's just a pain to use the full name. Imagine having to write out the National Aeronautics and Space Administration instead of NASA. I don't even use the full name in conversation, forget typing it.

If you see one you don't know, google it or ask the poster. Not terribly difficult.

What I don't like are critical typos (typing mistakes,
for the uninitiated). A common one is where
someone types "not" in place of "now," as in:

"Ajax cleaner is now what I use" when they meant:
"Ajax cleaner is not what I use."

I go out and buy a case of Ajax cleaner based on
that post and miss the retraction many posts
later. (frustration emoticon here)

People who confuse "their," "there," and "they're" don't bother me that much on a cruising forum. But people who repeatedly refer to the "birth" in their boat--not just once, but over and over, so it is clearly not just a typo--make me laugh. Especially when they're trying to give other people advice.

Hey! Guess what? If you don't know enough about boats to know the proper name for a BERTH, then I am surely not going to be stupid enough to take your advice about anything else to do with boats!

Wasn't there once a comma error in a document that cost some number of millions of dollars?

As for all the births on board, I'd never realized so many liveaboard midwives were using boats as home offices. Perhaps this is better than having some other professions taking over marinas.

Two of my pet hates. Your instead of you're,, ie "your going to die."

A classified "add". In the past two years all of a sudden an "ad", yes I know it is an abreviation, has developed a second d. Is it then an addvert that it is short for?

For the native English speakers among us who do not read or speak another language, just consider how difficult it would be to piece out French strewn with even the common abbreviations for phrases, like FWIW [for what it's worth], or AFAIK [as far as I know], for instance. Of course the non native English speaker can go look it up, but that detracts from the pleasures of reading your posts. Might it be a courtesy to just write out what you mean? Too much of an imposition? Really?
