Re: Pirate Tale Told on the BBC News!

I still fail to understand why the crew aren’t allowed to arm themselves?
I believe that one .50 cal would run the Pirates off, and if most ships were armed they would find some other illegal way to extort money.
I don’t want to turn this into a gun thread, but why don’t they arm them with something? Even high pressure water cannons? Surely boarding a ship has to have a lot of similarities to assaulting a fort or castle? That is very difficult to do if the fort or castle is defended.
Many try to paint the Pirates as just poor men who are making a living anyway they can, but good men would not have treated their captives that way, those were evil men.

Re: Pirate Tale Told on the BBC News!

RPG’s fired from a small boat can create big problems for a large cargo vessel. There’s no way to tell how much firepower the attackers have, or how much resistance they’ll put up with before they decide they’re going to show you they mean business, or are simply not going to let you get away without at least some damage, and let you have it, midships. Then you start leaking oil and the company is liable for the cleanup as well as the lost cargo, damage to the vessel and possibly the crew. Navies are supposed to keep the sea lanes open and free of piracy. Perhaps we need fewer aircraft carriers and more “hands-on” vessels that can be of more immediate use.

Back in the days of sail, merchantmen had cannons to defend themselves....when did we turn into sheep?
