Passwords In A Paperless World

How are people storing passwords who are out cruising?

I don't think storing passwords on digital devices is a great idea because if the device is somehow hacked, all the passwords could be stolen.

I am uncomfortable with writing them down on paper and leaving them on the yacht.

The best thing I have been able to come up with is to have one book with the account log ins, and a separate book that has the passwords for those accounts set up in a way that nobody would think that the two books are related in any way.

Maybe I am overlooking a simpler and more secure way of storing passwords.

What are people doing to keep their passwords secure while out cruising? Where do they store those passwords?

I just email the NSA or CIA and have them send over my latest passwords.

I use evernote, well , for everything and anything I might need to know in the future. Password protected to get into in the first place then you can encrypt text with another password then I have the actual passwords a bit cryptic, which sometimes means a bit of head scratching even for me to figure out so reckon it's pretty secure
Then quick to do a search and find them again.

Re: Passwords In A Paperless World

Personally, I use a local password manager. Don't trust online password managers, they will (already have been in some cases) get hacked.

For me, I use KeePass. Installed and operated from a USB thumb drive. Backed up to separate device regularly. You can use a master password to open the database, or a separate key file, or both. I use both, the key file is a JPG buried in my photo albums (and also backed up on separate devices).

It's a pain in the a.. but better than having passwords for someone to find. Also use two-factor authentication wherever I can, usually if we have internet to do the banking (or whatever) we also have the ability to get a token from the bank.

Re: Passwords In A Paperless World

I leave password HINTS in plain sight. Sometimes even right on a keyboard. But you'd have to be one damned fine tea-leaf-gazer to figure out what the password is from looking at the hint.

For instance, the hint might say "Mary had a little" Is the password LAMB? Or maybe, it is MARCH, which comes in like a lamb. Or, LION, because that's how March goes out. Wait, maybe that's all wrong and I'm thinking Jim Morrison and Mary had a little, just didn't she? And the password is LIZARD KING.

Really, get creative with your hints. Get twisted with them. And then you can write them down in plain sight. CONAN DOYLE. ERCULE POIROT. FLYING TOASTERS.

The fact that you're on a boat and not in an office doesn't change anything.

Imho, your HIN makes a decent password.

One other thing, passwords really shouldn't be pass words - they should be pass phrases. Length is your friend. No less than the person who wrote the NIST standards on passwords and complexity recently apologized publicly and said that complexity (special characters, numbers, etc.) in a short password was not the right way to go, length was the key.

My wife has a list of password 'hints'. Problem is, she is the only one able to figure them out. If she dies before me, I'm in a heap of trouble.

Re: Passwords In A Paperless World

LastPass app, sync'd on all devices.

I have many thousands of sites / apps / services stored from over the last ten years, each with a unique password that looks like

@y2lKEVKjck978$PW0J@l3M^006tpgGXh

Which it generates for you automatically.

Only need to remember your one master password, which should be a very good one 8-)

Re: Passwords In A Paperless World

Like Dsanduril, I use a password manager. For me, 1password works well, has cloud storage and syncs to my devices.

Cheers, RickG

Re: Passwords In A Paperless World

I have two algorithms for all of my passwords. One is for passwords I don't change often or at all, the other for those I change monthly (finances, email, identity stuff). It's easier for me than storing them somewhere with cryptic hints.

Yes, complex passwords are self defeating I think, because how people remember them...they write them down! Totally defeating the purpose.
