Re: Our Dinghy "Flo" Saved the Mothership Today!

Today's anchorage entertainment is being brought to us by the Moorings Company from a Leopard 514 Powercat. These knuckleheads keep trying to drop their anchor which looks to be directly attached to the bridle. I see the anchor and bridle drop together dropping around 12ft of chain in total, into water that's 45 ft deep. Wonder why it's not working for them? They're on try #5, fortunately for me they're downwind.

Doesn't the Moorings Company require some sort of certificate of competence?

They keep trying- they KNOW they need 46 feet of chain!

Downwind is your friend...

Cheers!

Rules are interesting. To take your own boat into a French canal you need some sort of certificate of competence (ICC I think but I may be wrong). To rent a canal boat, you don't. I'm sure that the Moorings is just interested in leasing boats. After all, they aren't the Moorings boats.

Re: Our Dinghy "Flo" Saved the Mothership Today!

The charter people's anchoring ability only seems to be an issue between 1pm until about 5pm. Nearly all of them head into town and tie up in marinas for the evening, leaving the anchorages empty.

Note to self: Try to always be on the boat 1-5pm. It was the same in Ibiza.

It's a huge empty anchorage, OMG it's like my boat's a magnet. I don't understand how they can be dragging... wind is maybe only 2 knots at most.

There must be an area with bad holding up by the beach, I'm thinking that a change in scenery might be a good idea for tomorrow.
Are you kidding me? Again? I wonder what the bottom is like.

It's like beach sand, I went down two days ago to pick up a dropped Allen wrench. Beach sand in all directions. Nearly all the boats around here are using undersized Delta plow anchors that came with the boat as original equipment.

Technique/lack of competence seems to be the problem, most charter folks just dump 50-75 feet of chain into a pile. The water is 35-65ft deep and crystal clear, making it appear much shallower than it is. I've yet to see a single person reverse on an anchor to set it.

Drop and go seems to be the norm, which is quite funny to watch when the entire group jumps in for a swim and the boat drifts away with them swimming around it... totally oblivious to what's happening.

Re: Our Dinghy "Flo" Saved the Mothership Today!

I took the family out to fireworks show on the water last week, it made me remember why I don't go out on holidays. I had to fend off 4 dragging boats. It was blowing about 15.

The first guy, I was polite to him and we chatted until he got close enough to actually fend off. He had two anchors out, not enough scope. He was just a genuinely clueless boater.

The second, I just gave them a little nudge as he got close enough, they were looking at the fireworks and had no idea they were dragging, they looked confused when I pushed them away from my boat.

The next two were rafted together, didn't even have an anchor out. I yelled and told them I was anchored and that they better %$#@ing start their engines to keep from hitting me. They were clearly drunk AND bad, inconsiderate boaters.
