Origo 3000 out of control

My 2 year old Origo 3000 flamed last winter with flames coming out of every orifice, including the air intake holes in the front. I smothered it with a heavy cloth.

Then today, when I finished cooking breakfast and turned it off, it continued to burn on very low heat for a couple of hours before I realized it wasn't completely off.

It would not turn off. I finally poured water on it and put it out.

Now I am afraid of this stove.

Has anyone had similar issues? Anybody have solutions (other than dump the stove)

Strange. Might you have overfilled the canister? Maybe there was an unseen spill while filling it? Did you inspect the canister itself for any holes? Those are getting hard to find by the way, if you need a new one start hunting now.
Those stoves, and I have one too, are typically reliable and relatively safe. We’re definitely talking about an Origo 3000 right? I don’t mean to insult you, I just haven’t had any issues with mine at all like that.

As far as it not turning off, check to make sure that when you slide the flame adjuster to “off”, the flame cover is moving over all of the way. You may need to adjust it.

We’ve never had the flaming problem and we’ve had an Origo for 6 years, using it daily for the past 13 months. Sounds like your canister was too full.

The above advice is on the mark, it does sound like an over filled canister/spill fuel. Do check the linkage that moves the flame adjuster/shut off, it may not be moving all the way over to completely put out the flame. It’s a basic enough linkage so it is easy to manipulate to complete the full swing when using the control slide mechanism.

Fair winds,

If it "flamed up" as you describe, that means fuel outside of the canister.

I've never heard of one leaking before, but worth a look.

Or fuel was "spilled" into the stove somehow.

Like others have said, here and elsewhere, the Origo is a simple and safe stove. Thats one of the reasons people like it so much.

There is only one way this is happening; you are refilling the canisters while they are in place in the stove. Because that's the easiest thing to do. And you are overfilling them. Alcohol is spilling over the top of the canister and running down into and puddling in the stove body. When you light it up, the fumes are igniting.
Don't ask me how I know.
ALWAYS remove the canister to fill. And even better, take it outside. any spilled alcohol will simply evaporate very quickly.
As for it not shutting off, it is not unusual for it to take a few seconds for the flame to extinguish after you close it off. Especially if the canister is very full. Or overfull.
