Re: windows on submarines...

Obviously many posters are too young to remember 'Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea' TV series, the submarine 'Seaview' and the 'flying sub'.

Much respect to the submariners here, and those who have served!

They never said where the damage occurred. Do you suppose it was the rudder?

Hi Everyone:
I'm also a submariner from the Vietnam war era, and served on pig boats at that time. We had not near as many detection devices to watch below or on the surface.
But it hasn't changed much at all when other nations, placed in near proximity of each other, or in missions, either practicing or in near war games, will sooner or later bump or crash into each other. Including terra masses uncharted.
Also the US Navy will never tell the general public or other nations exactly what they were doing or what happened. Remember this, it is and still is the 'Silent Service', and what we did over the years would turn your heads twice around if all were known.
Submarines, (or any military profession) are very vulnerable when an accident occurs and those professional men and women can not accept mistakes or near misses as acceptable, especially even the slightest mistake can cause loss of life and result in disaster.
It's not an 'Ooops' position.

Re: Ooops..nuclear sub hits underwater object

China's reaction has been predictable and sophisticated - urging the US to tell the "truth" about the incident, including the intentions of the submarine voyage, the location of the incident, and whether a leak of radioactivity took place. See:

https://www.globaltimes.cn/page/202110/1235805.shtml

Media comment in Southeast Asian economies, including those that border the South China Sea, has been minimal, limited to reporting the incident based on what everyone presumes are US sources.

Most all Southeast Asian economies have made official statements indicating that they do not want a military contest (e.g. between US and PRC) in the South China Sea.

The ruling concept is that Southeast Asia has long declared itself to be a Zone of Peace, Freedom, and Neutrality (ZOPFAN).

Tightly linked to that is the traditional concept that "when elephants fight, the grass gets trampled". The Southeast Asian economies bordering the South China Sea see themselves as the grass. And they would prefer not to be trampled.

The South China Morning Post followed its reporting of the incident yesterday with a story on China's aspirations to have autonomous/semi-autonomous anti-submarine aircraft.

https://www.scmp.com/news/china/mili...p-us-and-japan

No media has repeated earlier stories about PRC vessels equipped with metal mesh nets to foul ships' propellers or semi-autonomous objects designed to collide/allide with other vessels.

Yea, back to the game we played with the Russians, bumper boats!!!!!!!!! Things are getting tense, at the Russkies had some sense of humour, unlike the chinses who only know one up-manship and always must be on top.

I've been told that the scariest place on earth for subs is Puget Sound. Wonder if that's correct.

You can always find someone to blame if you must. But you'd probably have to stretch it. I was not a submariner, but I did work with them closely for a while and they are the most focused and dedicated people in the Navy. Period. I'd find it very hard to believe that someone was slacking off.

You’ve got to remember that driving a submarine, is like working on a computer.
Once you open windows, the problems begin.

Why is Google Chrome like a submarine?
They tend to get a little slow, if you open too many windows.

How do you best sink a Canadian Submarine?
You swim down, and knock on the window. They're too polite not to open it, and greet you.

Apple is developing a submarine.
It’s moto: “Sink different!”

Re: Ooops..nuclear sub hits underwater object

Well I’ve been in the south China Sea and this story sounds a bit stretched to me.
My bet is somebody wasplaying chicken with somebody else and some bodies collided.
Any chinese subs going home early?

Re: Ooops..nuclear sub hits underwater object

They probably hit an Alien USO or maybe were attacked by one. That’s a possibility as we know USO’s are there operating at “impossible” speeds. We will never know the truth.

My thoughts exactly. I worked with a former submariner 40 years ago. They played cat and mouse with the Russians in their missile sub. He said the spent nearly three days stopped within feet of a Russian fast attack sub before it drifted away. It’s totally possible another sub was involved or even some Chinese munitions. Running into a rock is good cover for a possible international incident.

Consider the current Chinese posturing, just sayin’.
