Re: one for the east coat Australians How to find the owner of a moored Yacht

Rob,

I run a Facebook page for yacht owners in Greenwell Point so that people can contact each other. The maritime services will not hand out peoples info. Most of the boats here are owned by people that live elsewhere, Canberra, Goulburn, Wollongong etc. Pm me with some details and I may be able to help.

Try the water police, I recently needed to contact the owner of the vessel near me that had an alarm going off and the water police given the Rego number were able to find contact details for him

This has become the go-to response for practically every government department in Australia.

Even when it is patently clear it is NOT a privacy issue, such as when you are freely offering your contact details and asking that they be forwarded to another individual.

I used to think it was because of the construction of the privacy legislation, but I've worked enough with the legislation now to realise it has simply become a way of avoiding any semblance of effort on the part of the government department.

You can see the train of thought... "Oh crap, I will have to do something! Hang on, no I don't, I'll just tell this person I can't do it because of privacy issues.". Done. Back to sleep at my desk.

Sorry, had to rant.

Good on you for trying, I hope one or more of the given suggestions work.

I agree 100% ,
its like ,,
"ITS NOT MY PROBLEM < DON`T MAKE IT MY PROBLEM"

I can sort of see where they come from some times with all the legal stuff ,,, .
Im like i wouldnt want anyone giving my details out to just anyone ,, but passing on my phone number should be ok ,,,
I think some just dont want the bother ,,

Also "RANTS: are ok

Good luck with it, anyway.
