A sobering counter to the "go now" narrative.

Re: Oh wow. Abandoned boat.

Inexperienced dreamer buys boat, does what he thinks needs to be done on it (bow mounted radar among other things- I assume he planned to take no green water over the bow), and heads out. Sometimes it works for them, others it doesn’t.

The remarkable thing to me about this is that the boat sold almost instantly on Craigslist. These dreamers getting into incidents like this happen every so often. A sellers market like this however is something I’ve never heard of, let alone seen in my 20 years or so of boating. Insanity.

My thoughts exactly. Rarely, if ever, do dreamers come back with their tails between their legs to admit failure.

If you're travelling from NH to either Bahamas or Caribbean

He didn't bother trying to re-anchor and call for help?? He abandoned ship and made no comment to anyone? Just sold his dinghy and did a Planes, Trains and Automobiles back home again with no regard to leaving a hazard to navigation or a huge salvage operation on someone's front lawn.

Irresponsible on so many levels. This sounds more like an insurance scam.

IF you're travelling from New Hampshire to either the Bahamas or South America, then rounding Cape Cod (rather than the Cape Cod canal) then turning in to traverse Pollock Rip into Nantucket Bay makes ZERO Sense.

You would either take the CC canal, or round Nantucket. Going into Nanatucket Sound....WTF??

Running before he can crawl..
Doubt its an insurance scam.. tow is paid and boat is sold so no further claim.
As for the choice of route.. ahh the joys of electronic chart navigation and forgetting to zoom in..
Lesson on anchoring.. use chain..

Re: Oh wow. Abandoned boat.

Can't tell what kind of boat that is, but damage appears to be on leading edge of a keel with encapsulated ballast... I'd love to get a closer look at the boat.

...and someone else bought the boat from him, unseen?

...and I wonder what he had in those ammo cans?

Re: Oh wow. Abandoned boat.

I didn’t realize it’s that easy to sell a salvaged boat as I don’t know the regulations around it. I mean, doesn’t the boat belong to the salvagers at this point?

Quote from the owner...

Although an investigation is ongoing, Bialk could face penalties, Smith said: Not having the boat registered with a name or a hailing port; and failing to report the incident. Bialk has been cooperative, Smith said.

An insurance company is picking up the cost of the towing, which is about $8,000, Bialk said.

In the article the Harbor Master and crew salvaged the boat. Municipalities don't tend to be in the salvage business. A Harbormaster claiming salvage rights would be like the Fire Dept. taking possession of your property as compensation for putting out your house fire.

Salvage rights are to protect the financial interests and to incentivize private citizens and businesses to render aid to distressed vessels.

Makes sense, thank you.

Last year during Isaias two guys were out in our bay in their small powerboat looking to salvage boats that came off their moorings, the guy who maintains the moorings interrupted them and secured a boat and called the owner to take control, the next day he tells me the story followed by “bloody salvagers” 😊

What’s the old saying? It’s time to abandon ship when you have to step up into your raft?

That radar.......

That would be a pointlessly superficial analogy.

At least crawl before you run is closer.

Not according to his quote in the article.. seems very much on point to me..

Quote
Bialk went to bed with all of his weather gear still on. At about 3:30 in the morning, he was thrown to the floor when the boat lurched to one side. His anchor alarm went off, indicating that the boat had traveled a distance from where he originally was located.
"I could see the light on the transom (on the boat's stern) but couldn’t see the front of the boat,” Bialk said. When he reached the bow, the rope that was holding the boat down was “limp,” he said.
The boat had been drifting. End Quote.

Likely it was that bump that caused the damage when he hit a rock after his rode parted.
