O'Day Javelin

We just bought a 14' O'day Javelin to day sail while we refit our Pearson for cruising. Figured it would also be a nice boat for my wife to sail since she has not sailed a small boat since high school. The Javelin came with main, jib and spinnaker so it has all the same sails as our Pearson just at a very smaller scale.

Has anyone here owned or sailed one of these boats? If so is there anything we should watch out for? We would like to keep her on a mooring, is it truly self bailing as advertised? The fractional rig seems a bit flimsy to me, can she be sailed in anything over 10 knots of wind?

About 5000 were made over ten years and the price for this one with trailer and 2 hp Honda was to hard to pass up.

Re: O'Day Javelin

I grew up sailing a Javelin. They do get over powered easily. Be very careful jibing in high winds as they flip easy. They are fun to sail, and great for playing around on. It is fun to try to steer with the sails and your body weight only.

Our main had no reef, and she does not sail that well with just one sail, so 15 knots is about the limit.

What a great sailing boat! Sails like a witch and is very stable for a 14' boat with a 23' mast.
