Non-varnish finish

The toe rail on my boat is unfinished hardwood. I plan to clean and sand it as part of rejuvenating it.

I want to coat it but not with varnish. I read a thread on Deks Olje and D1 seems to fit the bill. But I'm wondering if there are other alternatives.

The reason I ask is that when I was docked at St. Simons Island I met a couple that cleaned and sanded their toerail and then coated it with something that was not a varnish. They said it was a sealer. But I did not write the name down. It could have been Deks D1 but maybe it was something else.

Any ideas?

Re: Non-varnish finish

Google Teak Sealers. There are dozens of them on the market. They will work on woods other than teak as well. I refinished a walnut rifle stock with teak sealer. It was beautiful.

The problem is the further south you are, the shorter life they have. Of course that’s true of varnish too. Here in south Florida the life of varnish is measured in months, teak sealers in weeks.

Re: Non-varnish finish

I've heard good things about Semco teak sealer, and am happy with it so far although I've only been testing it for just under a year. On the other hand, here in NZ the UV is so extreme most things don't last even that long, so it's promising so far.
