Question No lifeline gate, can I simply replace the connectors with Pelican hooks?

I have no lifeline gate, can I simply replace the connectors with Pelican hooks, where the line attaches to the stern rail?

I enter the boat at the cockpit so I would think this would be a natural connection point. The Stern rail is stout.

I understand that while not a true freestanding "gate". It gives access without new stanchions and installation. The lifelins will sag to the deck until re-connected.

Yes, that's a common practice.

Re: No lifeline gate, can I simply replace the connectors with Pelican hooks?

Thank you, I just found a photo and wondered if it was safe. Currently there is a gap where the connecting hardware is missing. It was apparently a Long turnbuckle (ALL of them are missing).

I just need to figure out if a pelican can bridge the gap.

Thanks again.

In addition to that general design, I crimped on cable sleeves to keep the cable from sliding more than a tiny bit through the adjoining stanchions. Then it only sags a little when the turnbuckles are released.

Just be careful of anything or anyone pulling on the remaining cables...the remaining stantion is likely not well supported.

Often you will see a strut added to the next stantion, so it won't bend it.

Re: No lifeline gate, can I simply replace the connectors with Pelican hooks?

I used a stainless two-piece shaft collar to ensure the lines did not go slack when I added pelican hooks to my port side lifelines at the stern. The starboard side has a standard boarding gate.
The collars are easily removable and a standard industrial fitting available from numerous sources such as McMaster-Carr.

Really nice product to do the Job.

Thank you all for your help. They put the engine back in my boat this week and I don't want to fall overboard before I get a chance to use it..
